An important role has been envisaged for cattle during the Neolithic period in Britain based on their prominence within the faunal assemblages of the period as a whole. The relative ease with which cattle can be moved over long distances and the requirement to provide ample pastureland leads almost inescapably to the consideration of prehistoric cattle movement. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the mobility of Late Neolithic cattle at the well-known site of Durrington Walls, Wiltshire. 87Sr/86Sr values from cattle (Bos taurus) teeth were compared to local vegetation samples, well established values from archaeological material and to known geological conditions in order to determine whether individual animals were raised in areas with similar geological conditions as those found at the site (i.e. chalkland), and therefore whether the animals were of allochthonous or autochthonous origin. In total, 13 mandibular molars from Durrington Walls were analysed. Two of the animals included in the study were certainly raised under conditions similar to those found in the vicinity of Durrington Walls, but the other 11 provided signatures so distinct from that found locally that they could not have been raised on chalkland. From the results it is suggested that cattle were brought to the site from a variety of grazing areas in different parts of Britain. The implication of these findings is that the movement of cattle was undertaken during the Late Neolithic, and that in a number of cases substantial distances must have been traversed in order for animals to reach the site. In addition, the study provided valuable information for the interpretation of the site, which attracted people from a variety of regions, probably for ceremonial reasons.  相似文献

In most available studies, unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are idealized as rectangular sections, while in reality walls have effective sectional shapes such as C, I, T, and L. In this article, the results of experimental and analytical assessment of flange effects on the behavior of I- and C-shaped URM walls are reported. Four clay brick walls at half scale were tested. Two specimens were designed with I- and C-shaped sections, and for comparison, two additional specimens were designed without flanges. The tests showed that under constant axial load the strength of the I-shaped wall increases, but that of the C-shaped wall decreases, because of out-of-plane distortion effects. Despite the loss of strength, both flanged walls indicated almost similar initial stiffness, deformation capacity, and mode of failure in comparison with walls without flanges. A mixed-mode analytical model is proposed to predict the lateral force displacement curve of flanged URM (FURM) walls. The proposed analytical model is based on section analysis of the walls and shows good agreement with previous experimental results.  相似文献

Town walls have always played a critical role in shaping the identities and images of the communities they embrace. Today, the surviving fabric of urban defences is a feature of heritage holding great potential as a cultural resource but in management terms one that poses substantial challenges, both practical and philosophical. Town walls can be conceptualised as a ‘dissonant’ form of heritage whose value is contested between different interest groups and whose meanings are not static but can be rewritten. Evidence is gathered from walled towns across Europe, including member towns of the WTFC (Walled Towns Friendship Circle) and inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Sites, to explore the cyclical biographies of town walls in their transformation from civic monuments, through phases of neglect, decay and destruction to their current status as cherished cultural resources. To explore this area of interface between archaeology and tourism studies, the varying attitudes of populations and heritage agencies to walled heritage are reviewed through examination of policies of conservation, preservation, presentation and restoration. Areas of commonality and contrast are thus identified.  相似文献

A comprehensive study is undertaken to assess and calibrate the force reduction factors (R) adopted in modern seismic codes. Refined expressions are employed to calculate the R factors “supply” for 12 buildings of various characteristics represent a wide range of medium-rise RC buildings. The “supply” values are then compared with the “design” and “demand” recommended in the literature. A comprehensive range of response criteria at the member and storey levels, including shear as a failure criterion, alongside a detailed modelling approach and an extensively verified analytical tool are utilised. A rigorous technique is employed to evaluate R factors, including inelastic pushover and incremental dynamic collapse analyses employing eight natural and artificial records. In the light of the information obtained from more than 1500 inelastic analyses, it is concluded that including shear and vertical motion in assessment and calculations of R factors is necessary. Force reduction factors adopted by the design code (Eurocode 8) are over-conservative and can be safely increased, particularly for regular frame structures designed to lower PGA and higher ductility levels.  相似文献

Over the past ten years, the development of analytical procedures to accurately evaluate the seismic performance of existing buildings has gathered the attention of researchers. This has resulted in the publication of several standards, which, however, inadequately cover the issue of retrofit strategy selection. In the present article, a procedure that allows a comparison of available strategies in order to select the optimum solution for an existing deficient building is proposed. The procedure is based on calculating the pushover curve for the unstrengthened structure. A capacity spectrum is then estimated assuming different retrofit scenarios, which is then used for the evaluation of the strategies. The latter is based on criteria that assess the main structural system characteristics and how each solution benefits them. The final step of the procedure introduces simplified rules that allow the approximate design of each retrofit solution, which allows the evaluation of their applicability. The proposed procedure was applied to two idealized buildings with different structural systems. Results obtained indicate that less effective or inapplicable rehabilitation strategies were properly detected. Thus, the results were considered acceptable in terms of identifying the possible optimum strategy, which, however, should be verified with a detailed design of the retrofit system.  相似文献

In this article, a performance-based seismic design (PBD) methodology is proposed for the design of reinforced concrete buildings, taking into account the influence of infill walls. Two variants of the PBD framework are examined: The first is based on the non-linear static analysis procedure (NSP) while the second relies on the non-linear dynamic analysis procedure (NDP). Both design approaches are compared in the context of structural optimization with reference to the best possible design achieved for each case examined. Life-cycle cost analysis is considered a reliable tool for assessing the performance of structural systems and it is employed in this study for assessing the optimum designs obtained. The optimization part of the problem is performed with an Evolutionary Algorithm while three performance objectives are implemented in all formulations of the design procedures. The two most important findings can be summarized as follows: (i) if structural realization follows the design assumptions, then total expected life-cycle cost of the three type of structures, bare, fully infilled and open ground story, is almost the same and (ii) if an open ground story building is designed as bare or as fully infilled frame, real performance will be much worse than anticipated at the design stage.  相似文献

The goal of this article is to select those real (or recorded) ground motions capable of exposing the low- and mid-rise reinforced concrete frame structures to an extreme limit state. By performing correlation analyses, two optimal intensity measures are first selected to represent the ground motion damage potential. Then based on each record's damage potential, four subsets of strong ground motions, referred to as the most unfavorable ground motions, are identified and preliminarily confirmed to be applicable to the low- and mid-rise RC frame structures.  相似文献

A series of component-level experiments have been conducted aiming to evaluate the force and displacement capacities of typical stud-track screw connections (STCs) in steel-framed partition walls. The variables considered in these experiments included screw-edge distances, loading protocols (monotonic or cyclic), and stud and track thicknesses. The experimental data was then utilized to develop different capacity fragility curves for STCs in terms of displacements. A series of analytical STC hinge models were also proposed and validated using this data. The hinge models can be adopted in future studies to develop a comprehensive analytical model for a typical partition wall assembly.  相似文献
