朱凤瀚先生新近撰文介绍并作了详细讨论的觉公簋,由于其铭文关涉到晋国的早期历史,从而又影响到西周王年,故引起了学者的重视。之后,夏商周断代工程办公室的《简报》又登载了李学勤先生的     

绍兴印山大墓的若干问题——读《印山越王陵》札记

浙江绍兴发现的印山大墓,是一座既有浓郁东南地区吴越文化的因素又有很多中原地区周文化因素的越王级基葬,地上高大的封土堆、两面坡顶的无墙基室、带把手的独木棺等因素是沿袭了越地本地的传统,其他如封土的形状、丘垄外环壕和神道的形式、墓室外积炭等,则带有浓烈的模仿中原周王陵的色彩,而不仅仅是中原秦国的文化因素。     

五代前后降魔图像的新发展——以巴黎集美美术馆所藏敦煌出土绢画降魔图为例

本文以集美美术馆所藏绢本着色降魔图为,论述了五代时期降魔图像新发展的有关情况。作品中的降魔释迦佛表现出若干新时代造型特征,密教明王的出现增强了佛的威慑力。魔众种类繁多,复杂多变,艺术表现趋于极限。释迦佛神通变化以及转轮圣王七宝被吸收进来,强化了释迦超人的性格。图像中还可以见到来自印度帕拉朝美术的因素。此图像的内容和表现远远超出了北朝时期同类作品,代表了后期降魔图像发展的最高水准。推测此图像出现与当时流行俗讲的社会背景有关。     

殷墟四期晚段遗存年代窥观

史称武王克殷后,封纣子武庚、禄父,以续殷祀,令修行盘庚之政,殷民大说。其后武庚叛乱,周公再度东征,迁顽民。据此可知,自牧野之战至于成王时期,小屯一带仍有殷遗民居住。既然如此,在殷墟显然应该有西周初期文化遗存。50年前笔者即撰文提出,后冈圆葬坑     

“A Different Kind of Theo-Politics: Abraham Joshua Heschel,the Prophets and the Civil Rights Movement”

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the sharp differences in the understanding of the Hebrew prophets by theologians, Jewish and Protestant, in Germany and the United States, with a particular focus on their invocation of prophetic teachings in relation to social and political movements. The sharp denigrations of the prophets – described as ecstatics (Gunkel) or rural naifs (Troeltsch) rendered the prophets useless as figures of inspiration in Germany in relation to racism, colonialism, and WWI. By contrast, the prophets have played a crucial role in American civil thought, especially in the Civil Rights Movement. The distinctive and influential interpretation of prophetic consciousness developed by the German-American Jewish theologian Abraham Joshua Heschel is examined for its parallels with the prophetic theology of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the political ramifications of Heschel's link between prophetic revelation and political leadership.     

Arnau de Vilanova at the summit of Oloron (1287): a major inflection point in the life of a medieval physician

In July 1287, during mediation by Edward I for the release of Charles, prince of Salerno, the kings of England and Aragon met with Charles' representatives at a large assembly at Oloron in Béarn, on the edge of the Pyrenees west of Bayonne. An English document deriving from this meeting reveals the presence there of the famous physician Arnau de Vilanova, a member of the Aragonese party, and recipient of a gift from the king of England. This article demonstrates how this document and other recent discoveries, properly contextualised, can illuminate an obscure period in Arnau's life in which he turned towards a new pattern of existence.     

The evolution of maritime Chinese historiography in the United States: toward a transnational and interdisciplinary approach

ABSTRACT

Once considered a marginal side-story to the Fairbank-inspired narrative of an agrarian-centered, land-bound China, Chinese maritime history has received increasing attention in the United States as a research field in its own right. Through sustained engagement with trends in regional, comparative, military, and global histories, and dialogue with European and Asian academia, the efforts of several generations of scholars after Fairbank have slowly broken down his paradigm. Studies of maritime China are increasingly showing a broad, integrated maritime East Asian region comprising the seas and their littoral from the Sea of Japan to the Strait of Melaka. This article surveys the historiographical development of the field. It also highlights my work-in-progress on autonomous overseas Chinese polities along the Gulf of Siam littoral in mainland Southeast Asia during the eighteenth century as one possible future path for the study of maritime Chinese history.
