An analytically solvable core-periphery model

We develop an analytically solvable version of the central modelof ‘new economic geography’, the so called core-peripherymodel by Krugman. While the modified model reproduces all theappealing features of the original one, it also allows us toobtain additional analytical results that are out of reach inKrugman's set-up. First, we are able to assess the exact numberof equilibria and their global stability properties. Second,we are able to investigate the implications of exogenous asymmetriesbetween countries. This is achieved by introducing heterogeneitybetween high-skill mobile and low-skill immobile workers, whichmay also be an empirically attractive property.

Colonialism, Material Culture, and Identity in the Rio Grande and Hudson River Valleys

A comparison of two seventeenth-century colonial encounters in North America, examining the Pueblo–Spanish interaction in New Mexico and the Mohawk–Dutch situation in New York. I focus on material culture flows, the role of women, forms of labor that were extracted in each setting and how each of these contributed to power relations and identity construction.

On the origins of border effects: insights from the Habsburg Empire

What are the origins of border effects on trade and why do borderscontinue to matter in periods of increasing economic integration?We explore the hypothesis that border effects emerged as a resultof asymmetric economic integration in the unique historicalsetting of the multi-national Habsburg Empire prior to the FirstWorld War. While markets tended to integrate mainly due to improvedinfrastructure, ethno-linguistic networks had persistent tradediverting effects. We find that the political borders whichseparated the empire's successor states after the First WorldWar became visible in the economy from the mid-1880s onwards,already 25–30 years before the First World War. This effectof a ‘border before a border’ cannot be explainedby factors such as administrative barriers, physical geography,changes in infrastructure or patterns of integration with neighbouringregions outside of the Habsburg customs and monetary union.However, controlling for the changing ethno-linguistic compositionof the population across the regional capital cities of theempire does explain most of the estimated border effects.     

INTENTIONALISM,INTENTIONALITY, AND REPORTING BELIEFS1

The dominant view of twentieth‐century analytic philosophy has been that all thinking is always in a language, that languages are vehicles of thought. The same view has been widespread in continental philosophy as well. In recent decades, however, the opposite view—that languages serve merely to express language‐independent thought‐contents or propositions—has been more widely accepted. The debate has a direct equivalent in the philosophy of history: when historians report the beliefs of historical figures, do they report the sentences or propositions that these historical figures believed to be true or false? In this paper I argue in favor of the latter, intentionalist, view. My arguments center mostly on the problems with translation that are likely to arise when a historian reports the beliefs of historical figures who expressed them in a language other than the one in which the historian is writing. In discussing these problems the paper presents an application of John Searle's theory of intentionality to the philosophy of history.

本文作者结合多年教学实践,对日语中的指示词用法进行分析,认为其用法分为现场指示和文脉指示两种。文中首先以阐明现场指示的用法为基础,然后以文脉指示用法为焦点进行探讨,进而得出コソア其基本用法是指视野中事物的现场的指示,文脉指示用法是它的延伸和应用。在实际应用中,一种用法有时也会根据作者所表达的意愿不同而有所转换。
