Catholic Mission and Conversion in Scandinavia

The relation between mission, religious conversion and identity construction is the subject of my paper. On a concrete level, I discuss the Catholic mission and conversions in Scandinavia from the middle of the 19th century to the present time. Up to the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), the Catholic Church strongly emphasised its claim to be the only true church, and as a consequence, all non-Catholic regions were regarded as missionary areas. Most of the priests and sisters working in Scandinavia were foreigners, whereas converts from Protestantism dominated the parishes. I pay special attention to the question of national and religious identity and the changing discourses of Catholic conversion, reflected in conversion narratives.     

Some New Methods of Topologic Classification of Channel Networks

Some new methods for the topologic classification of channel networks are proposed. These methods are all based on the concept of topologic path length, or number of links from the network outlet to a junction or source. Two parameters, the total path length (sum of all path lengths) and the diameter (largest path length) are shown to be useful in network analysis. Some advantages of these parameters are that they are easy to measure, have straightforward topologic interpretations, and are closely related to important geometric measures. Moreover, they are capable of explaining various empirical geomorphic “laws,” such as the 0.6 power relation between mainstream length and area.     

Middle Stone Age Technology and Cultural Evolution at Magubike Rockshelter,Southern Tanzania

This paper contributes new information to the body of evidence for Middle Stone Age tool-use in Tanzania. Magubike rockshelter is located in an archaeologically unexplored region of the south-central part of the country, and thus fills a significant geographical gap between sites further to the north and those to the south in Zambia and Mozambique. Early analysis of a portion of the lithic materials demonstrates parallel changes in lithic reduction intensity, raw material preference and typology. This article explores possible explanations for this pattern, including the possibility that they reflect changes to local environment, and suggests avenues for future research.     

Der Briefwechsel Karls des Kühnen: Ein editionsprojekt

In his inaugural lecture, delivered at the University fof Kiel on 23 January 1985, and here printed, the author describes some of the problems, and aims, of his project, already under way, to edit the surviving correspondence of Charles of Burgundy, who in 1467 succeeded his father as duke and died some ten years later on the battlefield of Nancy. The edition is to include all surviving letters written by or to Charles during his entire lifetime, and also all letters mentioned in the accounts or other sources. The proposed editorial techniques, hoping to make full use of the computer, are described, and attention is drawn to the historical significance of the edition.

Zusammenfassung

In seiner hier veröffentlichten Antrittsvorlesung an der Universität Kiel vom 23. Januar 1985, beschreibt der Autor einige der Ziele und Probleme seines schon begonnenen Vorhabens, den gesamten üherlieferten Briefwechsel Karls des Kühnen von Burgund herauszugeben, der 1467 seinem Vater als Herzog nachfolgte und knapp zehn Jahre später auf dem Schlachtfeld von Nancy umkam. Die Edition soll nicht nur die erhaltenen, bei Karl während seines gesamten Lebens ein- und von ihm ausgehenden Briefe erfassen, sondern auch alle Schreiben, die in Rechnungen and anderen Quellen erwähnt sind. Die vorgeschlagene Editionstechnik, die sich auf die elektronische Datenverarbeitung stützen möchte, wird vorgestellt und die historische Bedeutung der Edition erläutert.
