NARRATORS OF THE ARCTIC: IMAGES AND MOVEMENTS IN NORTHLAND NARRATIVES

While the use of public policy to construct a Canadian identity has been established in the literature, what is less well understood is whether national identity, once established, might shape Canadians' feelings about these same public policies. This article examines the extent to which citizens' national identities influence their pride in Canada's social security system, and how this relationship may be changing over time. Using data from the International Social Science Programme's 1995 and 2003 National Identity Modules, the article argues that citizens' national identities help explain the contours of social security attitudes in Canada, and that this relationship persists despite significant policy change in the field. Additionally, the paper suggests that political actors may successfully increase public support for their social security policies by “framing” them in ways that appeal to citizens' definitions of Canada.     

Norms and illegality in the social margins

The special section in this issue approaches the theme of illegal, semi-legal and extra-legal practices in Italy from a range of critical perspectives informed by ethnography, history and theory. The glimpses of social practice offered by our contributors explore the ambiguities and ironies of presumed distinctions between the lawful and the illicit, or the legitimate and the immoral. Five case studies depict different networks of social actors navigating contingent landscapes of possibility and constraint, sanctions and incentives, imagination and doubt. Seen in empirical terms, ‘from the bottom up’, the neoliberal terrain of normativity is shown to be far more heterogeneous and uncertain than we might have anticipated. Far from reconfirming our stereotypes, Italy offers many challenges to conventional assumptions about law and criminality.     

Die Frau Metta Catharina von Flensburg: a Danish brigantine wrecked in 1786 in Plymouth Sound,England

The Danish brigantine Die Frau Metta Catharina von Flensburg, outward bound from St Petersburg to Genoa, was wrecked in Plymouth Sound in 1786. With the consent of the wreck's owner, HRH The Prince of Wales, sports divers carried out a 30‐year‐long project to excavate and display material from the site. Aspects of shipboard life aboard this 18th‐century Baltic trader, together with an insight into her remarkable cargo of ‘Russia’ leather, have been presented to audiences in the UK and abroad. 'It feels like being Deaf is normal': an exploration into the complexities of defining D/deafness and young D/deaf people's identities

In this article we examine the ways in which young D/deaf British people express and experience their identities and how their D/deafness intersects with other self‐identifications. We examine the controversial debates within D/deaf communities, cultures and studies about D/deafness as disability versus D/deafness as linguistic minority. We explore the ways in which 'Deaf ' and 'deaf ' definitions and identities contradict, overlap, coexist and compete. At the same time we discuss the problems with binary constructions of deaf/hearing or Deaf/deaf for capturing the full experiences of young D/deaf people's lives. We consider the reasons why there is such a dearth of research within the social sciences which focuses on young D/deaf people's lives and discuss the complexities of conducting this type of research. Young D/deaf people's articulations of identities and cultural experiences are presented. We conclude with suggestions for researchers and also with a hope that the current D/deaf challenges towards the hearing world and deaf challenges within the Deaf world may bring future possibilities and opportunities for D/deaf young people in the U.K.     

The archaeology of medieval and early modern battlefields in Flanders

The first pre-modern battlefield survey in Flanders was a pilot study at Oudenaarde in 2007. Three projects followed, between 2011 and 2013, funded by the Flemish Heritage Agency: an assessment of battlefields for inclusion on the Archaeological Inventory; a survey of Oudenaarde battlefield (1708); and an assessment of Lafelt battlefield (1747). This article reviews these projects in a wider context to reveal the current state of pre-modern battlefield archaeology in Flanders. It discusses the chronology, type and scale of battlefields, the character of the evidence, the methodology for its investigation, and threats to the sites and their conservation management needs.
