“Three concepts”—Hospitality, cosmopolitanism, and human dignity: Reconceptualising heritage futures

Resumen Utilizando las imágenes de la destrucción del patrimonio cultural Palestino como punto de partida, este artículo trata de reflexionar de forma crítica sobre el futuro del WAC recapacitando sobre las actuales preocupaciones, a nivel teórico y práctico, en relación con el patrimonio cultural y con la “arqueología de un único mundo”. Mi estrategia es “dotar” de tres conceptos—hospitalidad, el ser cosmopolita y la dignidad humana, a este debate sobre el futuro del WAC, a través de tres autores, Virginia Woolf, Jacques Derrida, y Edward Said. En mi opinión estos tres ‘conceptos’ no son sólo fundamentales para la reconceptualización del patrimonio cultural sino también para sacar a la luz cuestiones claves en relación con la identidad institucional del WAC y los posibles cambios futuros. Mis conclusiones ratifican que la madurez del WAC cristaliza la necesidad de conmemorar no sólo las aspiraciones fundacionales y los logros acumulados, sino también de abrir el futuro de la organización, de forma crítica y reflexiva, a nuevos miembros y a preocupaciones, arqueologías y patrimonios alternativos o paralelos.

Résumé A l'aide d'images sur la destruction de l'héritage culturel palestinien je cherche à réfléchir sur l'avenir du WAC à travers les rapports contemporains philosopho-operationels de l'héritage culturel et de l'archéologie mondiale. Ma stratégie est de démontrer à travers trois auteurs tels que Virginia Woolf, Jacques Derrida, et Edward Said, trois idées-l'hospitalité, le cosmopolitanisme et la dignité humaine, portant sur ce débat concernant l'avenir du WAC. Je discute le fait que ces idées sont non seulement fondamentales à la reconceptualisation de l'héritage culturel mais aussi capables de donner naissance à des questions fondamentales sur l'identité de l'institution et sur de possibles transformations du WAC. Mes conclusions répètent que l'entrée en majorité du WAC souligne le besoin non seulement de commémorer les aspirations et les efforts accomplis mais aussi d'élargir l'avenir de l'organisation vers de nouvelles fonctions et des héritages archéologiques.

     

The New Men's History and the Peculiar Absence of Gendered Power: Some Remedies from Early American Gender History

Historians with feminist commitments have expressed reservations about men's history and men's studies. This unease has existed more or less from the first appearance of men's history as a specialised area of inquiry, and shows no signs of abating. The first part of this article explores the sources of this unease. It discusses several guiding premises of men's history and shows that they tend to lead to the occlusion of men's gendered power over women. Nonetheless, the scrutiny of the gender of men is the logical outgrowth of several decades of theoretical and empirical work on gender–witness the many historians of women and gender who have recently turned their attention to the systematic study of manliness and masculinity. With the help of examples drawn from the scholarship on the history of the British colonies in America and the early United States, the second part of this article enumerates several strategies for successfully highlighting men's gendered power in histories of manliness and masculinity.     

Introduction: Financialisation and Development in Asia under Late Capitalism

Abstract

Multilateral development agencies have increasingly focused attention on underdeveloped countries in Asia as potential new sites for financial capital. Often referred to as “emerging markets”, these economies are seen as ripe for private sector investment and, at the same time, in need of foreign capital to support rapid industrialisation, modernisation and poverty reduction. For development agencies, this confluence of interests suggests a means for quickly closing the “development gap”, primarily through mobilising techno-managerial modalities designed to reduce barriers to capital entry and other institutional inefficiencies seen as inimical to investment. Thus development agencies now encourage the construction of “enabling environments” to support “market driven development” through processes of “financialisation”. Development, in this sense, is no longer state-led or state-centred, but rather financially driven and privately procured.

As we highlight in this special issue, however, financialised modes of development are highly contested and problematic. Indeed, the diffusion into the underdeveloped world of essentially developed world financialisation agendas that seek to instil a broad-based market rationalism that downloads new costs and risks to populations is of significant concern. This Introduction sets in context and introduces a much needed set of articles that bring clarity to financialisation in developing Asia and its implications for development as a process of substantively improving material conditions.

This essay is an analysis of a series of writings by the Australian intellectual historian Ian Hunter on the subject of ‘theory’. It examines the methodological issues raised by attempting to write a history of theory. The essay particularly seeks to analyse the various aporias at stake in Hunter's project: between the empirical and the transcendental, between history and the event, and between theory and ‘empirical’ history.     

Tracking Fish and Human Response to Earthquakes on the Northwest Coast of Washington State,USA: A Preliminary Study at Tse-whit-zen

Evidence of large earthquakes occurring along the Pacific Northwest Coast is reflected in coastal stratigraphy from Oregon to British Columbia, where there also exists an extensive archaeological record of Native American occupation. Tse-whit-zen, a large Native American village dating between ～2800 yrs BP and the historic era, located on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, was excavated with exceptionally fine stratigraphic control allowing for precise comparison of these natural and cultural records. Here we report on the ～10,000 fish remains from one 2 × 2 m excavation block; this assemblage spans the timing of one seismic event, allowing study of changes in relative taxonomic abundance through time that may coincide with earthquakes or other environmental changes. Results indicate a wide variety of fish taxa were used throughout the dated occupation. Comparisons of fish use before and after one earthquake event shows a decline in salmon (Oncorhynchus sp.) and an increase in herring (Clupea pallasii), shifts consistent with earthquake-related habitat loss. This serves as a pilot study for a large-scale collaborative project that is drawing on the range in animal types (invertebrates, mammals, birds, and fishes) to assess human response to gradual and abrupt environmental change at Tse-whit-zen.     

Ben Quilty: the fog of war

ABSTRACT

This essay looks at the war paintings of Ben Quilty, who in October 2011 was stationed with Australian troops fighting against the Taliban in Afghanistan as part of Australia’s Official War Art Scheme. Quilty’s portraits, in fact made back at home in his studio after he returned, show soldiers naked, in pain, reliving traumatic episodes from their war experiences. They have been almost universally praised as providing a new and compelling image of war for those who have not experienced it themselves. We examine these portraits closely, arguing that they express a new post-modern ideology of “interpassivity”, allowing the spectator to exhibit signs of concern for soldiers, without actually doing anything to change their situation. In this we suggest that Quilty’s paintings contain a meaning that goes against the intentions of the artist and the understanding of their audience. Contrary to their dominant reading, they express something about our culture that our culture is unable to admit about itself.
