SEISMIC RESPONSE CONTROL OF CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE USING DIFFERENT CONTROL STRATEGIES

The goal of this research is to study the effect of cable vibration through a number of control cases of a cable-stayed bridge. In order to consider the complicated dynamic behaviour of the full-scale bridge, a three-dimensional numerical model of the MATLAB-based analysis tool has been developed by the complete simulation of the Gi-Lu bridge. The dynamic characteristics of cables in the cable-stayed bridge are verified between the field experiment and the result from numerical simulation using geometrically nonlinear beam elements in MATLAB program. Three types of control devices are selected to reduce the response of the bridge deck which includes: actuators, viscous-elastic dampers with large capacity, and base isolations. Moreover, two types of control devices, MR dampers and viscous dampers, are installed either between the deck and cables and/or between two neighbouring cables for controlling the cable vibration. A modified bi-viscous model combined with convergent rules is used to describe the behaviour of MR dampers. Finally, through evaluation criteria the control effectiveness on the cable-stayed bridge using different control strategies is examined.     

Towards an understanding of local protest: hospital closure and community resistance

The aim of this paper is to suggest an analytical framework through which the complex question of hospital closure and local protest can be further explored. The significance of this area of study lies with the extraordinary events that surrounded a campaign to save the Kidderminster General Hospital from downsizing. Whilst the hospital was not saved, the local campaign committee organizing the protest took their fight into the political arena and were successful in gaining a parliamentary voice in the 2001 general elections. Such an achievement has had considerable political implications, however, the question asked here is how might we begin to interpret the events that took place. To this end, the paper draws on current geographical literature in an attempt to construct a framework that accounts for both national policy debates and the local context within which such campaigns emerge.

Abstract

A recent online article in The Daily Beast listed archaeology as one of the thirteen most useless undergraduate degrees. The article failed to identify transferable job skills gained while engaged in archaeological work. Further, archaeological field programmes and labs offer an alternative learning environment that benefits some students. This article reviews two archaeological projects that used archaeology as a form of social activism to provide employment and education to an under-served community as a fundamental aspect of its goals. The Hopedale Archaeology Project is an archaeology field project based in a north-east Canadian community that provides education and work opportunities for Inuit students. The Veterans Curation Program based in the United States provides temporary employment to recently discharged military veterans in an archaeological and archival curation lab. These programmes assist individuals to re-establish themselves within the workforce and add to their academic and professional growth, as well as incorporate a public outreach component that makes archaeology and history more accessible to the public.     

Reconnecting with darkness: gloomy landscapes,lightless places

This paper investigates the effects and affects of darkness, a condition that is progressively becoming less familiar for those of us in the over-illuminated West. In countering the prevailing cultural understanding that darkness is a negative condition, I draw attention to other historical and cultural ways of positively valuing darkness. Subsequently, in drawing on two sites, a gloomy landscape at a dark sky park in South Scotland, and a tourist attraction in which a simulation of New York is experienced in a completely dark environment, I explore the multivalent qualities of darkness. In foregrounding the becoming of sensory experience in gloomy space, I highlight the mobilisation of alternative modes of visual perception in as well as the emergence of non-visual apprehensions, and suggest that the potentialities of darkness might foster progressive forms of conviviality, communication and imagination.
