Strontium (Sr) isotope analysis of archaeological crops is a potential method of provenancing and identifying the movement of crops in the past, but there remains uncertainty about whether original 87Sr/86Sr values can be obtained from carbonized buried grains. We have determined that hydrochloric acid (HCl) leaching removes some, but not all, exogenous Sr from carbonized cereal grains buried in soil for up to one year. We conclude that while further work could refine the leaching method, Sr isotope analysis of archaeological cereal grains can distinguish crops sourced from outside a particular (e.g., local) area if it can be shown that leaching moves grain 87Sr/86Sr values significantly away from the expected Sr signature. 相似文献
In this study, I use a queer theoretical framework to critically assess narratives of reproductive reorientation in the early Turkish republic. I focus on the writings of one of the central medical professionals associated with the Kemalist regime, Dr Besim Ömer. Inspired by Sara Ahmed’s approach to orientation, I undertake a queer reading of Dr Besim Ömer’s writings on reproductive bodies and the spaces that they inhabit. Spatial dimensions of reproductive misalignment and reorientation are especially evident in Dr Besim Ömer’s work between 1923 and 1938. Rural and urban women are written as out-of-line with respect to the presumed national family line of Turkishness, one that extended Turkish bodies from the heroically fertile past and into a successfully (re)productive future. This assessment is predicated upon a spatio-corporeal imaginary: the naturally fecund Turkish woman, a body whose otherwise reproductively inclined tendencies had become misaligned in both the stagnating rural and industrializing urban spaces of the late Ottoman Empire and early Turkish republic. I draw upon Ahmed in order to highlight the slantwise character of desires for properly oriented reproductive bodies and spaces that were in-line with the nationalistic family line of Turkishness; desires that were predicated upon a placeless idealization and an embodied utopia. Spatio-corporeal imaginaries such as these have limited the scope and dimension of what constitutes, as Ahmed describes, ‘a life worth living.’ 相似文献

This paper discusses a highly diverse assemblage of Ostracoda, particularly biostratigraphically useful species, from a richly fossiliferous shallow-marine deposit of late Oligocene age on Cosy Dell farm, near Waimumu, Southland, New Zealand. The ostracod fauna, consisting of 126 species, is yet to be fully analysed, although it is clear that this new window into the nearshore fauna of the mid-Cenozoic provides the earliest records of many characteristic extant New Zealand genera and species, including several species hitherto only known as far back as the early Miocene (Otaian–Altonian New Zealand local Stages). Finding these younger species in an Oligocene deposit was unexpected and indicates that our current knowledge of mid-Cenozoic ostracod age ranges, particularly for nearshore species, is incomplete. Using nannofossils and molluscs, the Cosy Dell deposit is dated as late Oligocene (Duntroonian or lower Waitakian local Stages) in age; therefore, the new ostracod species occurrences described here are considered valid range extensions. Although the biostratigraphic application of the benthonic ostracod species discussed is limited owing to the effects of sedimentary facies and other palaeoenvironmental factors, the ostracod fossil record does include significant extinction and inception events that offer correlative potential for mid-Cenozoic stratigraphical studies. This study identified a need for modern illustration of many species, and we provide scanning electron microscope illustrations of those Cosy Dell taxa previously considered biostratigraphically useful, as support for species identification and associated biostratigraphic conclusions.
Most studies of Christianity in the early PRC have focused on the politicization of religious practices under the Three-Self Patriotic Movement, explaining how the Christian faith empowered people to resist the state’s atheistic propaganda. In fact, both Communist officials and Christians invoked ideas about transcendent power and moral purpose, blurring the boundary between secular and religious concerns. The state-sanctioned patriotic religions had greatly impacted the political and theological orientations of Chinese Christians in the Maoist era. This article looks at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Shanghai, one of the first Protestant denominations to be denounced in the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. When the state infiltrated the Adventist institutions, some of the pro-government Adventist leaders worked with the officials to bring the church closer to the socialist order. Most of the Adventists, however, resisted the state and organized themselves into a diffused network of house churches. This study highlights the fluid and complex political environment that the Adventists experienced, and the ways they interacted with the Maoist state. The reorientation of theological concerns, the new strategies for evangelization, and the growth of autonomous church networks enabled the Adventists to be a fast-growing religious movement. 相似文献
