Summary. This paper illustrates the prospects for a fuller understanding of ancient foodstuffs by applying a range of analytical techniques to charred food residues on pottery. The relevant techniques of organic chemistry are briefly described. First results on Neolithic material from Runnymede stand amongst few for prehistoric Europe. They demonstrate the potential importance of such analyses both in redressing imbalances present at the site level and in opening wider issues, such as the functions attached to particular pot forms. The identification of beeswax in a British Neolithic context prompts an enquiry into the nature of early bee management and the suggestion that 'forest beekeeping'may have been widespread in temperate Neolithic Europe.  相似文献

The campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have had profound effects on both the British and US militaries. Among the most important is the way in which they have challenged traditional assumptions about the character of unconventional conflict and the role of the military within comprehensive strategies for encouraging sustainable peace. In the UK, the most important doctrinal response has been JDP 3–40 Security and Stabilisation: the military contribution. Security and Stabilisation is an ambitious attempt to synthesize elements of counterinsurgency, counterterrorism, peace support and state‐building within a single doctrine that reflects the lessons learned from recent British operational experience. This article examines the purpose, impact and potential value of this important innovation in British doctrine. To do so, the article explores the genesis of Stabilization; analyses its impact upon extant British doctrine for counterinsurgency and peace support; discusses its relationship with the most important related US doctrines, FM 3–24: the counterinsurgency field manual and FM 3–07: the stability operations field manual; and debates the function of doctrine more broadly. It concludes by summarizing the primary challenges Security and Stabilisation must overcome if it is to make a serious contribution to the theory and practice of such complex interventions.  相似文献

This article addresses the impacts of cluster-based economic development strategies on (a) low- and middle-income people, (b) economically distressed urban and rural places, and (c) small enterprises. It draws on the collective experiences and ideas of a small group of experts and practitioners from various parts of the US and Europe to pinpoint some of the reasons why certain people, places, and firms are left out or fall behind in regional efforts to develop economies based on clusters, identify the barriers to more widely dispersed benefits, and suggest some opportunities for surmounting those barriers. It goes on to recommend new approaches and initiatives that extend opportunities to marginalized populations, less favoured regions, and very small firms and thereby produce more just clusters.  相似文献

The use of relief-patterned flue-tiles in Roman Britain falls into three main periods: c. 75–90, c. 120–25, and c. 155–75. The assignment of particular dies to each of these periods is examined. The nature of the industry and the specialised functions of particular types of tiles are discussed within the chronological framework. An appendix deals with the sequence of tiletypes used at Fishbourne and a chronological difficulty involving Fishbourne and the Chichester thermae.  相似文献

This paper describes a case of cervical rib that was observed in a skeleton from the St Bride's documented skeletal collection. The ontogenetic development of this phenomenon is discussed with reference to potential clinical symptoms including cyanosis, paraesthesia, muscular atrophy and even digital gangrene. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
