Industry policy under the accord: Reform vs traditionalism in economic management

During the emergence and implementation of the ALP‐ACTU Accord, commentators havé paid comparatively little attention to its industry‐policy aspect. But the Accord itself rests on important changes in Australian unionism, its new priority in employment policy and ambition to participate in policymaking in general. These changes have now crystallised in a more penetrating analysis of manufacturing decline and demands for industry‐policy reform within the framework of the Accord. The Hawke government, however, has fallen under the influence of an older, institutionalised tradition of Australian economic management that is frustrating the attempt to use industry policy to return to maintainable full employment and assert the labour movement's social priorities. The present conflict over industry policy thus represents a major threat to the Accord.     

ASSESSMENT OF IN-SITE VARIABILITY OF POTTERY FROM SESKLO,THESSALY

Results of X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, thin section analysis and scanning electron microscopy applied to the neolithic pottery of Sesklo indicated the existence of quality variation in pottery, which seems to be the result of using different raw materials and different technological procedures. This differentiation has been observed temporally and spatially in the two excavated areas of the site. Application of physicochemical techniques to technological studies of ancient pottery gives for the first time evidence, with potentially important applications, of the social and economic structure of neolithic Greece.     

Four "Iron Age" stamp seals from Qarn bint Sa'ud (Abu Dhabi Emirate – U A.E.)

In this brief contribution, attention is drawn to four stamp seals which were picked up in the late 1980's from the sand dunes covering the so-called and still unexcavated "Iron Age settlement" of Qarn bint Sa'ud in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.     

THE BUSINESS OF MOBILITY: GEOGRAPHY, LIBERALISM, AND THE CHARTER OF RIGHTS

Inspired by some important inter-disciplinary work in both legal studies and human geography, I explore the vision of geography - with special reference to the theorization of mobility - that appears to be expressed within mainstream legal discourse. I argue that the legal account is premised on the privileging of certain components of liberal thought, including the individual, the private sphere, and concepts of frictionless spatial mobility. I try to demonstrate that this vision is partial and selective and ignores an alternative and insistent account of the geography of social life that appears prevalent within civil society. Evidenced by the reactions of many small towns to threats of economic dislocation, the emphasis here appears to be one that elevates concepts of place and the community. Drawing upon recent higher court decisions in British Columbia concerning the meaning of section 6 (mobility rights) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, I argue, firstly, that the legal vision is ultimately indeterminate and contingent but, secondly, that its hegemony has certain implications for social life, social justice, and the city.
