FACTORS IN THE ECOLOGY OF WILD RICE IN NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN

Une demande croissante d'une économie viable dans la Saskatchewan du Nord a incité les responsables de l'agriculture provinciale à donner un appui plus soutenu aux programmes d'ensemencement de riz sauvage. Une production qui a décuplé depuis 1978 a donné des résultats encourageants. Cette expansion agricole a cependant été menée dans l'absence de données relatives à l'écologie locale. On donnera une vue d'ensemble de l'écologie concernant le riz sauvage, ainsi que les résultats d'une étude faite à La Ronge en Saskatchewan. Les résultats suggèrent que l'acidité de l'eau et la conductivité pourraient former la base d'une évaluation préliminaire d'endroits propices pour la culture dans les terrains recouverts d'une mince couche d'eau.
An increasing demand for a viable economy in northern Saskatchewan has led to a growing commitment from Saskatchewan Agriculture to support wild rice seeding programs. The results have been encouraging, with production increasing tenfold since 1978. However, this agricultural'expansion has been carried out in the absence of local ecological information. An overview of wild rice ecology is presented, together with the results of a study conducted at La Ronge, Saskatchewan. The results suggest that water pH and conductivity could form the basis of a preliminary evaluation of site potential in shallow aquatic environments.     

THE MINIMAX-MIN LOCATION PROBLEM*

We consider a new objective function for the placement of a public facility with reference to variations in accessibility : the minimization of the range between the maximal and the minimal distances to users. Some properties of the solution are given; algorithms for the Euclidean and rectilinear distance cases are presented.     

THE SEVEN THEMES OF MUSIC GEOGRAPHY*

Music geography first emerged as a subfield of cultural geography c. 1970, During the past 25 years, a significant body of research has been published in scholarly journals, books, and reference works. Seven major themes are outlined in the formation of music geography: I - origins (non-‘geographical’); II - world distribution and types; III - location analysis; IV-source areas of musical activities; V - trends based on electricity; VI - impact of music on landscapes; and VII - global music. A view is offered of how an eighth theme (technological innovations) might develop on the basis of recent observations. La géographiede la musique est apparueau début comme un sous-domaine de la géographie de la culture aux alentours de 1970. Au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années, un grand nombre de travaux sur ce sujet a été publié dans des revues scientifiques, des livres et des ouvrages de référence. On peut cerner sept thèmes principauxdans la formation de la géographie de la musique: 1. les origines (non ‘géographiques’); 2. la répartition mondiale et les genres; 3. /‘analyse de /‘emplacement; 4. les sources régionales des activités musicales; 5. les tendances fondées sur l'électricité; 6. l'impact de la musique sur les paysages; 7. la musique globale. À partir de récentes observations, on propose une perspective sur l'élaboration éventuelle d'un huitième thème, à savoir les innovations technologiques.
