While it is generally agreed that food processing has had a role in human evolution, the specific ways that is has affected
our evolution are not well understood. Using a Niche Construction Theory (NCT) perspective, coupled with methodologies borrowed
from “post-harvest” research in the plant sciences, this paper investigates the means and mechanism by which food processing
is of evolutionary consequence. The central tenet of NCT is that organisms have an active role in their own evolution through
reciprocal interactions with their environments; niche construction is understood to occur when organisms initiate long-term
changes to their environments that modify the selection pressures on themselves and their descendants (and on other organisms
in the environment). Humans and our hominin ancestors are considered to be the ultimate niche constructors due to our ability
to modify selection pressures through diverse culturally generated and transmitted cultural means, i.e. cultural niche construction.
In this paper, post-harvest methods are used to identify how food processing could feasibly have permitted hominins to modify
their evolutionary selection pressures. Food processing is shown to facilitate access to increasing amounts of digestible
nutrients and energy (kilocalories/kilojoules) as well as promoting increased dietary breadth and making possible the production
of safer and more stable foods. It is argued that these advancements catalysed related technological and ecological skills
and knowledge, which together with the nutritional benefits, further triggered changes in hominin brain and body and locomotory
adaptations and increased longevity, disease prevention and juvenile survival rates. 相似文献

Determining hand laterality during human evolution is important in order to identify brain hemispheric lateralization for motor tasks and, indirectly, to gain information on the complex cognitive functions of the human brain. In this paper, we present a new method for inferring handedness from lithic evidence. The study is based on an analysis of the scatter patterns of lithic remains from stone-knapping episodes. An experimental programme was carried out by 14 knappers (eight right-handed and six left-handed), ranging from individuals that had never even struck two pebbles together to individuals who were quite familiar with prehistoric tools and had some degree of practice. The results of the experiment show that the material scatter patterns of right- and left-handed knappers at group level are different, but they do overlap at certain intervals. At the individual level, the probability of falsely ascribing left- and right-handedness has also been estimated. In addition, we have adapted this method to be applied to the archaeological record. In this case, only well-preserved knapping events with no post-depositional alterations can be used to assign left- or right-handed knappers, with the former being more reliably detected than the latter. 相似文献

The Greek Neolithic, here divided into five phases, is the oldest in Europe. Geographically, it is the closest to the Near East and has thus long been seen as an impoverished derivative of the latter. However, recent research has tended to emphasize the autochthonous nature of Neolithic development in Europe, including Greece. The Greek Neolithic economy, which was based almost entirely on domesticates, and its densely packed, long-lived villages strongly recall the Near East, as do also the early emphasis on fine, decorated, nonculinary pottery and the wealth of figurines. On the other hand, the evolution of stylistic patterns is specifically Greek, although generally related to trends in the Balkans. Originality in the development of the Greek Neolithic is also seen in its latest phase, with apparent decreases, rather than increases, in site density, social differentiation, and, to some extent, long-distance trade. At the same time, however, the dichotomy became much sharper between the rich agricultural plains of northern Greece and the more pastoral(?) regions of the Peloponnese and Cycladic Islands; this presages similar contrasts during the Bronze Age. 相似文献

This article treats the first entry of a new prince as the start of a series of exchanges between the prince and his subjects. On the occasion of an entry, gifts in all kind of forms, subsistence, luxury and symbolic goods, were exchanged with the intention of establishing a bond between the new ruler and the subjects. These gifts were not standardised in the Burgundian Low Countries. There was a wide range of gifts, from wine to silverware and from money to horses. Some gifts can be linked to the princely right of lodging in places he passed on his itinerary, whereas others refer to marks of honour offered by the host. However, not all gifts were given spontaneously, but were the result of a negotiating process between the town and the prince's officials on the one hand and between the different towns of a principality on the other. Those officials benefited as well from entry gifts that trickled down to lower levels in the official hierarchy. Therefore, the gifts can be considered as personalised items in a bigger process of exchange and as a confirmation of the outcome of political negotiations. 相似文献
