The Virgin Anasazi,far western Puebloans

In the American Southwest, the Virgin Anasazi region included the western part of the Colorado Plateaus and the river valleys of the adjoining Mojave Desert in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. This occupation spanned the Puebloan periods from Basketmaker II to Early Pueblo III, roughly A.D. 1 to A.D. 1200. Virgin Anasazi subsistence combined cultivation with hunting and gathering. Current research is unveiling a prehistoric society with flexible food procurement strategies and group organization. They underwent a version of the pit house-to-pueblo transition familiar from the Kayenta and northern San Juan areas. Both intra- and interregional exchange seems to have peaked in Late Pueblo II times and then fallen off prior to the end of their culture history. Face-to-face communities remained small, even into the late 1100s, when other Anasazi areas saw the beginnings of aggregation. Their fate, early in the widespread abandonment of the northern Southwest, remains to be understood.     

The Struggle to Breathe: Living at Life Expectancy with Cystic Fibrosis

The first sizeable cohort of people living with cystic fibrosis(CF) has now reached adulthood. Gradual improvements in thediagnosis and treatment of the disease have increased life expectancyto approximately 32 years. Members of this cohort have livedall their lives near, at, or slightly beyond life expectancy.The authors tell the story of Lori Morris-Hughes, a 36-yearold who balances the demands of work and family life with life-longterminal illness. Whereas many accounts of medical advancementwrite the lived experiences of the ill out of history, Morris-Hughes'sillness narrative provides an account of the ways in which thetemporal and social conditions of existence are problematicfor those who live during times of increased life expectancy.Oral history is a particularly appropriate method of researchin the field of illness narrative.     

Game Resources, Social Interaction, and the Ecological Footprint in Southwest New Mexico

Humans have modified their environments for millennia, but the role of these impacts on economic and social strategies among communities can be difficult to assess. This is due in part to the difficulty of quantifying impacts, which hinders our evaluations of the effects of different resource acquisition strategies and impairs attempts to understand competing demands on resources and their effects on the evolution of social relations. In this paper we employ footprint analysis, a tool used in ecology, to assess the impact of prehistoric subsistence farming communities on the environment, specifically faunal resources. We use footprint analysis to quantify the impact of various strategies of game acquisition by Classic Mimbres period (AD 1000-1130) farmers in the North American Southwest. Assessments are then employed in identifying changes in social relations among communities that may have contributed to settlement changes in the region.     

‘Her – she,this woman,me’: the representation of subjectivity in Tom Murphy's Alice Trilogy

In this essay, I will discuss Murphy's exploration of the (un)bearable nature of an existence characterised by loss, and by longing, in his recent play sequence Alice Trilogy (2005). Positing the explicitly dualised characterisation in the first and third of these plays as a reflection of, and natural progression from, earlier dramaturgic representations of duality, I will examine Murphy's overt rendering of subjectivity, in Alice Trilogy, focusing upon the ways in which such theatrical duality explicates the silences which pervade the Purgatorial affective no-man's-land – or ‘in-betweenness’ – of mind, body, and soul.
