The 1989 Tasmanian election: The green independents consolidate

This paper provides an analysis of the election of 13 May 1989 which was a major watershed in Tasmanian politics. Independent members of parliament were elected in each of Tasmania's five electorates with the result that neither the Liberal Party nor the ALP could govern in their own right The period following the election was marked by continuing political drama punctuated by several key events. These events included the development of the Tasmanian Parliamentary Accord between the ALP and the Independents, continued pressure from supporters of the Liberal Party for a fresh election, and arrests in relation to an alleged attempt to bribe a newly‐elected ALP member to cross the floor and support the Liberal Party. The defeat of the Gray government in a vote of no‐confidence following the recall of parliament, and the resignation of Premier Gray, led to the commissioning of a minority ALP ministry, relying on the support of the Independents.     

Fluids and halogens at the diagenetic–metamorphic boundary: evidence from veins in continental basins, western Norway

Seven vein types are recognized in three continental Devonian molasse basins (the Hornelen, Kvamshesten and Solund basins) in western Norway. These include calcite‐, quartz‐ and epidote‐dominated veins. The salinities of fluid inclusions from quartz‐dominated veins in the Hornelen and Kvamshesten basins are close to or slightly higher than those for modern seawater, whereas the fluids from quartz‐ and calcite‐dominated veins in the Solund basin range from seawater values to 20 wt % NaCl equivalent. Minerals such as biotite, amphibole, titanite, chlorite and epidote are abundant in the latter veins, and are important constituents of the authigenic mineral assemblages. A combination of fluid inclusion and petrological data suggest that at least some of the veins formed at depths around 12–14 km. The Cl/Br ratios and the salinity of the fluid inclusions can be explained by interactions with evaporites, implying that the sedimentary environment forming the basin fill had the strongest influence upon low‐grade metamorphic fluid Cl and Br contents. Differences in the Cl/I and Na/Br ratios between the Solund basin and the Hornelen and Kvamshesten basins are best explained by local mass transfer between pore fluids and the surrounding rock matrix during burial and increasing temperatures.

16th-Century Ship Graffiti on the Town Walls of Eivissa, Balearic Islands, Spain

Among the historical ship depictions in Eivissa (Balearic Islands, Spain), the graffiti of galleys on the Renaissance city walls are of particular interest. From archival documents the building sequences of this monument can be confirmed. Thus the galley graffiti on the eastern side of the bastion of Sant Bernat can be narrowed down chronologically to slightly after 1568. These graffiti are also interpreted from the social history point of view, in the light of ongoing corsair incursions during the 16th century.

Digging in the Dark: The Underground War on the Western Front in World War I

Throughout the First World War, with the trenches largely static, the combatants tried to break the deadlock by tunnelling under one another’s trenches. The Tunnelling Companies of the British Royal Engineers were engaged in a bitter struggle against German Pioneers that left both sides with heavy casualties. A project to determine the location of one particular act of heroism in that underground war has resulted in the erection of a monument to the Tunnellers at Givenchy-lès-la-Bassée in northern France.     

Unstable Bodies: Science,Society, and Visual Work

In recent years increased attention has been paid to both modes and processes of seeing in anthropology. At the same time, the body as the locus of visual practice is increasingly problematized. The works reviewed here are all concerned with making people — and bodies — visible, but are aware of the methodological, moral, and political implications of this. Other common threads include the tension between reproduction and representation, the self-awareness of the seen and seeing body, and the roles of digital and other technologies in rendering bodies visible or, at least, present.
