Before directly addressing the titular question, this chapter examines how conceptions of hope often lead us astray, reaffirming rather than challenging the status quo. In analytic philosophy, hope is often understood as a desire that is not entirely justified with reasons. In critical theory, hope has recently been looked upon suspiciously, as an affect the circulation of which is intensified by neoliberal economics. In mid-twentieth-century German theology and theory, hope is viewed as entirely other-worldly. In liberation theology, the object of hope is identification with the poor. This article argues that each of these views produces antinomies, and each of these views ends up perpetuating the status quo: in a racial context, white supremacy. After exploring the antinomies of hope, the article urges that whites are to embrace these antinomies. They are to hope for despair. 相似文献

This article investigates an apparent contradiction between the growth in the popularity of fruit-eating in late Tudor and early Stuart England, and the generally held contemporary medical view that many types of unprocessed fruits were inappropriate to a healthful diet. The first section analyzes a broad range of household accounts and other sources of evidence to determine the extent to which fruit formed part of the daily fare of the English population. The second section looks at the advice offered in a broad cross-section of dietaries and botanical works with regard to the eating of fruit. Finally, as the manners in which fruits were eaten are discussed, it will become clear that they could often be accommodated within the humoral body, and that there was less of a discrepancy between dietary advice and fruit-eating than may seem to be the case. 相似文献

This paper engages with Indigenous peoples' conceptualisations of borders, arguing that these unsettle dominant Eurocentric constructs of the border as terrestrial, linear, bound and defined through western legal frameworks. It does this by drawing on one aspect of the many storytelling experiences offered by members of the Indigenous-owned Yolngu tourism business Bawaka Cultural Experiences in northern Australia. We argue that stories told to visitors about multiple and diverse connections between Yolngu and Makassan people from Sulawesi, Indonesia, are intentional constructions which challenge dominant conceptions of Australia as an isolated island-nation. The stories redefine the border as a dynamic and active space and as a site of complex encounters. The border itself is continuously recreated through stories in ways that emphasise the continuity and richness of land and sea-scapes and are based on non-linear conceptions of time. The stories invite non-Indigenous people to engage with different kinds of realities that exist in the north and to re-imagine Australia's north as a place of crossings and connections. 相似文献
