‘It is where blokes can be blokes’: making places in a New Zealand rugby club

Using the case study of a New Zealand rugby club, in this article, we highlight the role of gender and performance in place attachment. We discuss various performances that contribute to achieving a sense of attachment of club members to the (imagined) community of the rugby club and the different physical spaces of its home ground. Even though performances are played out and read against the backdrop of a popular discourse of New Zealand rugby masculinity, we did not observe characteristics of stereotypical ‘rugby masculinity’ in all rugby places, nor were performances the same throughout one day. Instead, variations were found depending on whether performance was ‘front stage’ or ‘backstage’.     

The 5th‐Century BC Shipwreck at Tektaş Burnu,Turkey: evidence for the ship's hull from nail concretions

The Tekta? Burnu ship (440–425 BC) sank along a rough and desolate stretch of the Turkish Aegean coast. Archaeological excavation of the shipwreck site by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University resulted in the retrieval of hundreds of small fragments from the ship's wooden hull and its metal fasteners. Recent study of this artefact assemblage suggests that the coastal trader was built with pine planks and made‐frames, and assembled by a shell‐based construction method. Fasteners include pegged mortise‐and‐tenon joints and double‐clenched copper nails, and the ship may have had laced extremities consistent with other contemporaneous shipwrecks.     

The rise and demise of the Irish and Scottish computer hardware industry

This paper examines the dynamics of the computer hardware industry in Ireland and Scotland in a global context, from its inception in the late 1950s to the present. It provides a detailed account of plant openings and closures in both the system assembly and the component manufacturing segment. It describes the development of the computer hardware industry from mainframe assembly, through minicomputer assembly to microcomputer assembly and the shift of system assembly and component production activity to the Far East and Eastern Europe since the mid-1990s. The developments are analysed in terms of Schoenberger's (1997) model of concentrated deconcentration in the context of time-based-competition. It is shown that the model, with substantial qualification, fits the developments since the 1980s.     

Quartz recrystallization and fluid flow during contact metamorphism: a cathodoluminescence study

Cathodoluminescence (CL) images of quartz grains in the Appin Quartzite from the aureole of the Ballachulish Igneous Complex (Scotland) reveal a textural complexity that we interpret in the light of published models of the evolution of the contact aureole. Five distinct generations of quartz can be discriminated in CL. The oldest of these is a dark luminescing mottled quartz (Type 1 quartz) that occurs in the centres of pre‐existing grains, in samples collected from 210 m to 0.1 m from the contact. Dark mottled quartz is interpreted to be unrecrystallized material and has a regional metamorphic CL spectral signature. The onset of contact metamorphism resulted in grain growth visible in CL as a series of fine‐scale alternating bands of bright and dark luminescing material (Type 2 quartz), which we attribute to infiltration of repeated pulses of small amounts of H₂O along grain boundaries. Close to the intrusion, a subgrain‐scale network of intragranular, bright luminescing features could have resulted from either intragranular microcrack‐controlled infiltration of H₂O at high temperatures or intergranular cracking followed by grain growth (Type 3 quartz). Broad bands of bright material on grain boundaries in samples that are inferred to have undergone partial melting are interpreted as quartz crystallized from the melt phase (Type 4 quartz). The final stage in the textural development is marked by a series of aligned fractures, detected in CL by nonluminescing material (Type 5 quartz) and corresponding closely with trails of fluid inclusions. These fractures are interpreted as the pathways for late‐stage, low‐temperature, retrogressive fluids.     

The Lead Ingots from the Wreck of the Zuiddorp (1712), Western Australia: a report on their provenance and manufacture

The Dutch United East India Company ship Zuiddorp vanished on its way to Batavia in 1712 – its last port of call was the Cape of Good Hope. After its wreck was found on the Western Australian coast, archaeological investigations resulted in the retrieval of 21 lead ingots. Recent study of this artefact assemblage, comprising both great pigs and pieces, suggests that they were of north English origin. Historical records indicate that the Dutch procured large quantities of lead from English sources and maritime trade links between English and Dutch ports were well established at the beginning of the 18th century. © 2012 The Authors
