Dietary reconstruction in Migration Period Central Germany: a carbon and nitrogen isotope study

This study presents bone collagen carbon and nitrogen isotope data from the Migration Period cemeteries (fifth/sixth century AD) of Obermöllern and Rathewitz in Central Germany. The human average δ ¹³C ratios of ?19.8?±?0.3 ‰ and δ ¹⁵N ratios of 9.6?±?0.9 ‰ (n?=?43) reflect a mixed diet in a temperate C3-based ecosystem without significant difference between the two sites. The average offset between human and faunal δ ¹³C and δ ¹⁵N values indicates a significant contribution of plant food to the human diet that has different isotope ratios from the forage of the animals. It furthermore suggests the influence of land management on the δ ¹⁵N values. One adult male from Obermöllern stands out due to his elevated nitrogen isotope ratio, body height, grave goods, and burial position. The collagen isotope data of this study are comparable with data from other central European sites and confirm rather stable communities with moderate variation in the environmental conditions of arable land.     

Predetermined for Predestination? On the Assumed Notion of Predestination in the Dead Sea Scrolls

The present article argues that the concept of predestination does not on the whole lend itself to Qumran studies. Unlike the writings of Augustine and Calvin, the scrolls contain nothing like a doctrine of predestination. The article reviews several texts from 1QS, 1QH, and CD, generally understood to reflect predestination, and suggests other ways of describing and interpreting the material.     

Liberalism and Revivalism. A Comparative Case Study of Liberal Ideology,Individualism, and Revivalism in Schleswig-Holstein and Värmland,ca. 1860–1920

Only rarely have the non-secular roots of modern political individualism been subject to study. In this article I forward the hypothesis that modern political individualism, as expressed by 19th-century liberalism, was a result of individualistic, low Church and nonconformist revivals to the same extent that it was a product of secular rationalism. The hypothesis is probed in a comparative case study of rural liberalism in two north European regions, Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) and Värmland (Sweden). I address three key requirements of the hypothesis: that the nonconformist revival movements in 18th and 19th-century northern Europe promoted an individualistic outlook among their followers; that individuality rooted in religious awakenings was congenial to liberal ideology; and that traits of non-secular individualism were incorporated with everyday liberal political discourse and practice.     

Observations on the Development of Small Private Enterprises in Russia

A prominent Western specialist on the Russian economy presents an up-to-date overview of the country's small private business enterprises, here defined as registered enterprises employing up to 200 workers. Navigating through the inadequacies of the statistical evidence, the author presents and analyzes new data on size, employment, branch structure, geographical distribution, and related economic indices covering developments through the end of 1996. The paper highlights a number of factors that repress and impede development of small private enterprises, identifying among the principal obstacles arbitrary government regulation and punitive inspections involving extortion. Remedial measures in taxation and crime prevention as well as other forms of assistance are proposed and discussed.
