Factory closures, relocations and extensive measures to reduce personnel have consequences far beyond the affected employees – the social and economic coherence of the location and region are often negatively affected, too. This presents an interesting and important field for economic and applied geography. Apart from the development and evaluation of concepts of instruments of regional development, geographers can discuss and conceive options and obstacles for compensation and replacement measures after corporate restructuring. This text discusses structural and individual opportunities and obstacles in implementing company-induced economic development measures in the wider context of the corporate responsibility debate.     

Recreational Business Districts in Gulf of Mexico Seaside Resorts

Within the body of literature addressing tourism imprints upon the cultural landscape, the recreational business district (RBD) has been identified as a key component of a resort area, and the seaside has been no exception. Comprised of tourist-oriented businesses and historically focused upon the beach, incipient RBDs evolved at seaside termini of railroads, highways, and footpaths. Construction of bathhouses, casinos or beach hotels at these sites was followed by nearby clustering of secondary and tertiary recreational enterprises. Lateral expansion of coastal roads often led to RBD elongation, but RBD core areas usually remained as the central focus of tourist activity. Variations in RBD development have resulted from shifts in beach access corridors and/or ‘redevelopment’ of older resort landscapes. Along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, the RBD persists as an artifact of the touristic landscape.     

The impact of mining activities on the environment reflected by pollen,charcoal and geochemical analyses

This article presents results of a multi-proxy study of a fen deposit in the former mining district of Falkenstein near Schwaz in the Tyrol, Austria. The aim of the study in the framework of the special research program HiMAT (The History of Mining Activities in the Tyrol and Adjacent Areas – Impact on Environment & Human Societies) was to disclose the ecological impact of mining in pollen and heavy metal diagrams and to create a model combining the changes in palaeoecological proxies with historical evidences for mining. The application of this palaeoecological–historical model to prehistoric times allowed us to reconstruct the impact of mining and metallurgic activities in the surroundings of the fen during the last millennia. The results of stratigraphy, radiocarbon dating, LOI, pollen and micro-charcoal analyses as well as geochemical analyses of scandium, lead and lead isotopes validated by historical and archaeological data are hereby presented.     

Der neue Leiter des Difu – Stadtbürger aus ganzem Herzen

Abstrakt Das Deutsche Institut für Urbanistik (Difu) wurde 1973 auf Initiative der deutschen St?dte gegründet, um Kommunalverwaltungen durch wissenschaftlich fundierte Forschung und Fortbildung die L?sung ihrer Aufgaben zu erleichtern und darüber hinaus l?ngerfristige Perspektiven und Handlungsm?glichkeiten für zukünftige st?dtische Entwicklung aufzuzeigen. Seit dem 1. Oktober dieses Jahres hat das Difu mit Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Beckmann einen neuen Institutsleiter. Er l?st Prof. Dr. Heinrich M?ding ab, der die Einrichtung 14 Jahre führte. Dipl.-Geogr. Ute C. Bauer sprach mit Prof. Dr. Beckmann über seine Standpunkte und die Aufgaben des Difu.
