Despite equal opportunities legislation in many western societies, overt prejudice against minority groups is still evident. Yet, despite the persistence of equality issues, ‘prejudice’ is a term that is not widely employed in geography because of its association with a particular history of meaning within social psychology. In this paper I explore the concept of prejudice and its relationship to geographical research on discrimination and oppression. Then using original empirical research in three communities I examine how prejudice is justified and articulated by majority people. In doing so, I explore the complex intersectionalities of negative attitudes towards specific minority groups and the ways that specific mechanisms of sub-ordination can reinforce and support one another. 相似文献

In this paper, we extend recent discussions on the geographies of encounter to examine how students and staff narrate their experiences of cross-cultural contact on a British university campus. In theory, the campus environment offers opportunities for more intense and prolonged forms of contact than the ephemeral micro-scale forms of interaction that have dominated much of the literature on encounters. In practice, however, our interviews suggest that many respondents tend to self-segregate, or in some instances are prevented from mixing with ‘others’ through institutional arrangements. As we also illustrate, the pressures posed by commercial forces on campus orientate certain students towards lifestyle choices and expectations which exclude others. 相似文献

The child and childhood were vital aspects of the ideology of the French Revolution, and the education of the young in the new ways of thinking was perceived as an urgent ideological enterprise in the 1790s. Little attention has been paid, however, to the strategies employed by writers of books for the young to mould a young and impressionable readership. The decade saw an attempt to revise from the grass roots level children's experience of books and their ways of reading, both for leisure and for educational purposes. This paper considers how this aim evolved in a crucial period in the history of French children's literature with particular reference to the narrative of exemplary lives. 相似文献

Over recent months I have received silent phone calls and malicious homophobic mail that has referred to my sexual identity, my research, my teaching, and my position within the discipline of Geography, and I have been "outed" as a lesbian to my parents. This paper attempts to unpack these experiences: first, by examining the different processes (all of which play upon the mutual constitution of my academic self and sexual self) through which my harasser has sought to exclude me from the discipline of Geography; second, by exploring the geography of this harassment—focusing on how malicious letters/calls can disrupt meanings of place, particularly the way that personal geographies can be taken for granted until they are transgressed; third, by considering geographies of the law. Finally, the paper reflects onthe mutual constitution of my sexual identity, geographical research and writing, academic identity as a geographer, and the discipline of Geography itself. 相似文献

Modern western societies are becoming increasingly diverse, undergoing rapid demographic change as a product of new patterns of migration driven by processes of globalization. As populations and cultures have become more heterogeneous in this way, public space has been increasingly defined as a space of encounter. The growing focus on the significance of everyday contact with difference raises questions about the frameworks within which such encounters occur and, specifically, the extent to which incidental encounters are shaped or regulated by perceptions of formal obligations to comply with legislative frameworks, or informal expectations about appropriate ways of behaving in public space. Using original empirical data about what ordinary people think about equality laws, the paper contributes to social geographies by considering the spatial sensitivities and regulatory frameworks that shape encounters with difference. 相似文献

'It feels like being Deaf is normal': an exploration into the complexities of defining D/deafness and young D/deaf people's identities 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this article we examine the ways in which young D/deaf British people express and experience their identities and how their D/deafness intersects with other self‐identifications. We examine the controversial debates within D/deaf communities, cultures and studies about D/deafness as disability versus D/deafness as linguistic minority. We explore the ways in which 'Deaf ' and 'deaf ' definitions and identities contradict, overlap, coexist and compete. At the same time we discuss the problems with binary constructions of deaf/hearing or Deaf/deaf for capturing the full experiences of young D/deaf people's lives. We consider the reasons why there is such a dearth of research within the social sciences which focuses on young D/deaf people's lives and discuss the complexities of conducting this type of research. Young D/deaf people's articulations of identities and cultural experiences are presented. We conclude with suggestions for researchers and also with a hope that the current D/deaf challenges towards the hearing world and deaf challenges within the Deaf world may bring future possibilities and opportunities for D/deaf young people in the U.K. 相似文献

Charcoal assemblages occur in both natural and archaeological settings. Cell wall reflectance values of charcoal in polished
blocks under oil provide a proxy for temperature of formation. This paper aims to (1) determine whether wildfire charcoals
and anthropological charcoals from various pyrotechnical activities can be distinguished using reflectance data and (2) establish
if re-charring (i.e. use of charcoal fuel) can be recognised in the archaeological record through analysis of laboratory-produced
re-charred charcoals and charcoals from an experimental iron smelt and traditional bronze casting which utilised charcoal
fuel. Reflectance frequency data from assemblages representing burning of charcoal, in this case of iron smelting and bronze
casting, indicates temperatures from above the mean value of charcoal production (>475°C) up to the maximum temperature reached
in the subsequent process (i.e. >475 to >1,100°C). In contrast, wildfire charcoals showed a range of values including material
with barely measurable reflectance (minimum values from 0.06% to 0.56%Ro) to maximum reflectance values varying from 1.65%Ro
(Tilford) to 3.8%Ro (Zacca). The mean wildfire reflectance indicated temperatures in the range 325–400°C, which can therefore
clearly be distinguished from that of the charcoal burning processes. The laboratory-produced re-charred charcoals take on
the reflectance value of the highest temperatures experienced; reflectance values were not constrained by the original temperature
of formation. High temperatures are most easily achievable by the burning of charcoal fuel, and hence high reflectance charcoals
are likely to represent re-charred charcoal. Therefore, this quantitative reflectance method can be used in archaeology to
determine the minimum temperature of formation of charcoals in anthropological processes which involve fire, can indicate
the likelihood of use of charcoal or wood as fuel and can distinguish between an assemblage of high temperature anthropogenic
charcoals and charcoals formed from natural wildfire. 相似文献
