Although several efficient sample preparation methods have been devised for conventional radiocarbon dating, the advent of the accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) dating technique with its much smaller sample requirement and different counting method has meant that new preparation routes have had to be developed. Techniques used for the Oxford AMS system are described in this paper. 相似文献
In New South Wales the legal provisions for the protection of Aboriginal skeletal remains are clear. However, when human remains were discovered at the Aboriginal site of Angophora Reserve rockshelter in Sydney, the situation became complex and confused as coronial investigations and legal procedures dominated archaeological methodology and principle. In this paper we discuss how normal archaeological techniques had to be modified, often beyond acceptable levels, because of the demands of the Coroner's Court. We also discuss the legal and moral ramifications of this case, and focus on the philosophical issue of identification and retention of archaeological Aboriginal skeletal remains when there is conflict between different groups of ‘professionals‘. We also provide some initial results from the excavation, and outline the methodological constraints which were introduced by external influences. The problems and political ramifications generated by this approach are discussed within the framework of archaeological research and cultural resource management. 相似文献
Bulldozer disturbance during logging in southwest Manus has revealed a high density of prehistoric settlement sites on hilltops in the hinterland, where archaeological evidence is scanty on undisturbed surfaces. There is no evidence of such a settlement pattern in the area in the recent past Collections salvaged include obsidian nodules, debitage and many finely retouched points of different forms. Although there is a little-known source of obsidian in the area, at Mt Hahie, the provenance of the obsidian we collected remains to be established. Both Hahie and Lou sources may be represented. The sherds collected vary in decoration and fabric. The sites are undated, but the collections suggest that most are prehistoric, and many may represent repeated occupations. 相似文献
This paper contemplates whether, and in what ways, proprietary interests in land and land usage are affected by a World Heritage listing, using Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia, as the case study. The effect is measured through the identification and synthesis of the national legislative and local regulatory response to the implementation of the World Heritage listing. Such an analysis illustrates that the listing imposes significant restraints on land use and ownership which impact directly on the local resident communities of Angkor. A breakdown of the regulatory response also highlights the limitations inherent in the existing regulatory framework. There is a consideration of the concept of ‘ownership’ in a World Heritage site of ‘outstanding universal value’. In raising these issues, this paper highlights the challenges facing heritage managers in attempting to marry local needs with the demands of international heritage protection in the setting of a post‐conflict Southeast Asian nation. 相似文献
My Dog is My Home is an art activist project in Los Angeles dedicated to sharing testimonies about the redemptive bonds of care and love between homeless persons and their canine companions. These testimonies politicize the structural violence and oppressive norms about propertied citizenship and notions of home that operate to render homeless human and animal lives disposable and ungrievable. Informed by the experts’ testimonies on multispecies homelessness and an engagement with feminist care theory, we bring relational poverty studies into conversation with critical animal studies to reject this framing of homeless lives as disposable and to trouble the idea of property as the fundamental basis for value. We problematize these notions by highlighting the insights gained from witnessing the entangled empathetic relationships forged between homeless humans and dogs. These relationships are not only a window into the political economic material conditions and discourses that reproduce homelessness and the animal-as-property. We conclude that studying these bonds offers a collective politics of multispecies mutuality, care, and love. 相似文献
Binfield, P., Archer, M., Hand, S.J., Black, K.H., Myers, T.J., Gillespie, A.K. & Arena, D.A., June 2016. A new Miocene carnivorous marsupial, Barinya kutjamarpensis (Dasyuromorphia), from central Australia. Alcheringa 41, xx–xx. ISSN 0311-5518.
A new dasyuromorphian, Barinya kutjamarpensis sp. nov., is described on the basis of a partial dentary recovered from the Miocene Wipajiri Formation of northern South Australia. Although about the same size as the only other species of this genus, B. wangala from the Miocene faunal assemblages of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, it has significant differences in morphology including a very reduced talonid on M4 and proportionately wider molars. Based on the structural differences and the more extensive wear on its teeth, the central Australian species might have consumed harder or more abrasive prey in a more silt-rich environment than its congener, which hunted in the wet early to middle Miocene forests of Riversleigh.
