Agricultural illustrations of 19th century Korea: 'Imwon gyeongjeji' (Treatises on Management of Forest and Garden) by Seo Yugu

The generative relationship between text and image has long been established. Its structure evolved historically as a result of varying understandings of the functions of art and technology. Agriculture illustration, which emerged in China during the Song dynasty, is a prime example of this creative dialogue in which aspects of both disciplines were combined. Political, technological, and aesthetic concerns informed the reformulations of this new genre. This paper will address agricultural illustrations on nineteenth-century Korea, when notable changes occurred in the visualization of agricultural texts. It will explore changes in the understanding of the roles of agriculture, technology, and labor through an analysis of shifts in modes of illustration and the texts selected. The relationship between technology and visual representations during late Joseon Korea will be contextualized through an exploration of the evolution of technical drawing in East Asia. This paper will suggest that the recognition of imagery's ability to convey textual and technical information provided an important alternative paradigm for the presentation and use of knowledge.     

Seoul,Korea: its concept of culture and nature in heritage planning

This paper explores the concept of heritage as part of sustainable development planning. Heritage is taken to include both the cultural and natural spheres to incorporate people, activities, landscapes, monuments, landmarks, artefacts, and nature. Heritage planning then involves the sustainable development of the cultural and natural environment to prepare for its stewardship, research, and communication for the benefit of society. This perspective leads to broader questions on approaches to heritage planning where the cultural environment is considered specifically within sustainable development planning just as the natural environment is studied separately in specialised disciplines. The paper proposes that in developing resource‐management plans the effects of cultural resources on natural resources, and vice versa, must be integrated and addressed. Seoul, Korea, an historic metropolitan city that has gone through radical political and economic changes, is examined as a case study. It identifies how the city is integrating sustainability of the contextual association of the cultural and natural environment with promotion of economic growth.     

韩国粉青沙器的白化妆土工艺及其与中国陶瓷的关系

本文的主题是研究粉青沙器的化妆土工艺出现的历史背景,旨在探讨中韩陶瓷交流对粉青沙器制作的影响。在韩国陶瓷历史上,朝鲜时期(1392-1896)的粉青沙器是具有独特工艺特征的陶瓷样式,即在胎上用白化妆土粉妆,然后采用多样装饰技法,和磁州窑瓷器相似。关于朝鲜王朝制瓷业开始使用化妆土装饰技法的突然性和白瓷生产需求的背景,作者从中韩陶瓷交流史的角度,提出了两个论点:首先,高丽(918-1392)末朝鲜初期制瓷业衰退,在原料和工艺技术恶劣化的情况下,通过借鉴高丽时期已传入的中国磁州窑瓷器的化妆土工艺;应用于粉青沙器的生产。其次,中国陶瓷文化由青瓷转移到白地花纹的青花瓷器的发展趋势,直接影响到朝鲜制瓷业追求白瓷或白地瓷的状况,而在当时朝鲜制瓷业条件的限制下,只能以化妆土工艺表现白色地。这一现象也反映了当时中国先进陶瓷文化及陶瓷审美观念的变化。     

韩国的当代中国政治研究述评

迄今为止,还没有对韩国的中国政治研究状况做出评估。韩国的当代中国政治研究值得关注至少有以下三个理由:第一,韩中关系在过去十多年取得了非同寻常的扩展;第二,在中国学习的外国学生中,韩国留学生的数量最多;第三,尽管刚刚起步,越来越多的韩国学者在当代中国研究的主流英文期刊如《中国季刊》(The China Quarterly)和《中国杂志》(The China Journal)上发表文章。本文主要对三类学术成果进行

Shaking Table Test of the Taiwanese Traditional Dieh-Dou Timber Frame

This article attempts to explore the dynamic behavior of traditional Dieh-Dou timber structure under different combinations of structural forms and vertical loads. Using time-history record (TCU 084) from the Chi-Chi earthquake, two semi full-scale specimens (Symmetric and Asymmetric) were tested. Results showed that the Symmetric specimen tends to be damaged more easily and faster than the Asymmetric one. Damage pattern generally begins from the bottom Dou members and subsequently spreading upwards to the upper Dou, horizontal Gong members, and adjoining Shu members. Friction force between the contact surfaces is crucial towards the maintenance of overall structure. Increase vertical loadings have significant effect on the natural frequencies and global stiffness of the structure. Using the Single-Degree-Of-Freedom (SDOF) system, the derived stiffness is generally in good agreement with the dynamic results of both forms. This study suggests that the effects of increasing vertical loadings should be taken into consideration for future evaluation.     

The neo-developmental cultural industries policy of Korea: rationales and implications of an eclectic policy

ABSTRACT

This article undertakes an explanatory case study of the South Korean cultural industries policy shift instituted under the Kim Dae-Jung and Roh Moo-Hyun governments (1998–2008). This shift can be well positioned within the broader context of the creative turn in national cultural policy around the world, which was initiated by the British New Labour governments (1997–2010). Despite the similarities in the driving discourses and policy methods, the Korean policy shift was significantly distinguished from its British counterpart because of the differing pace and trajectories of industrialisation in the two countries. Adopting the concept of the East Asian developmental state as an entry point, this article explores how and why South Korea went through a cultural industries policy shift in the period following the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis and, additionally, examines what kinds of changes the policy shift brought about. Understanding the rationales and implications of this neo-developmental transformation can provide a unique opportunity to re-think the fashionable creative industries policies among various nations.
