Oral historians have begun to use interviews in significantways to supplement what may be described as the more traditionalinstitutional "bricks and mortar" histories of colleges anduniversities. Many large public universities in the Americaswere founded after 1850 and first published their historiesat the half-century mark following the beginning of the twentiethcentury. In many instances, these college histories focusedon firsts and founders and gave particular attention to thephysical development of the campus and especially the constructionof buildings. These two books, one from the University of Floridain Gainesville, and the other from the University of Albertain Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, present an interesting contrastin the use of oral history in tracing the histories of thesetwo universities from 1906 to 2006. The currently active fluid regime within the outboard region of the Southern Alps, New Zealand was investigated using a combination of field observations, carbon‐ and oxygen‐stable isotopes from fault‐hosted calcites and interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data. Active faulting in the region is dominated by NE striking and N striking, oppositely dipping thrust fault pairs. Stable isotopic analyses of calcites hosted within these fault zones range from 10 to 25‰δ18O and from ?33 to 0‰δ13C. These values reflect mixing of three parent fluids: meteoric water, carbon‐exchanged groundwater and minor deeper rock‐exchanged fluids, at temperatures of 10–90°C in the upper 3–4 km of the crust. A broad, ‘U‐shaped’ zone of high electrical conductivity (maximum depth c. 28 km) underlies the central Southern Alps. In the ductile region of the crust, the high‐conductivity zone is subhorizontal. Near‐vertical zones of high conductivity extend upward to the surface on both sides of the conductive zone. On the outboard side of the orogen, the conductive zone reaches the surface coincident with the trace of the active Forest Creek Faults. Near‐surface flow is shown to dominate the outboard region. Topographically driven meteoric water interacts, on a kilometre scale, with either carbon‐exchanged groundwater or directly with organic material within Pliocene gravels, resulting in a distinctive low 13C signal within fault‐hosted calcites of the outboard region. The high‐strain zone in the lower crust focuses the migration of deeply sourced fluids upward to the base of the brittle–ductile transition. Interconnected fluid is imaged as a narrow vertical zone of high conductivity in the upper crust, implying continuous permeability and possibly buoyancy‐driven flow of deeply sourced fluids to higher levels of the crust where they are detected by the isotopic analysis of the fault‐hosted calcites.  相似文献

A pair of articles appearing recently in this journal (Whitley & Clark, Journal of Archaeological Science12, 377-395, 1985; Kvamme, Journal of Archaeological Science17, 197-207, 1990) apply spatial autocorrelation analysis to the distribution of terminal long-count dates from southern Lowland Classic Maya monuments. The authors employ similar techniques yet arrive at contradictory conclusions regarding the presence of geographical patterning in the collapse of the Classic Maya civilization in this region. Kvamme's contention, however, that Whitley & Clark conducted an inappropriate analysis and arrived at an erroneous conclusion is unsubstantiated. Both articles present appropriate analyses and report results which support the presence of spatial patterning in the Lowland Maya dates.  相似文献

Chamberlain, P.M., Travouillon, K.J., Archer, M. & Hand, S.J., November 2015. Kutjamarcoot brevirostrum gen. et sp. nov., a new short-snouted, early Miocene bandicoot (Marsupialia: Peramelemorphia) from the Kutjamarpu Local Fauna (Wipajiri Formation) in South Australia. Alcheringa 40, XX–XX. ISSN 0311-5518.

A new bandicoot species, Kutjamarcoot brevirostrum gen. et sp. nov. (Peramelemorphia), is described here from the Leaf Locality, Kutjamarpu Local Fauna (LF), Wipajiri Formation (South Australia). The age of the fossil deposit is interpreted as early Miocene on the basis of biocorrelation between multiple species in the Kutjamarpu LF and local faunas from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area (WHA). Kutjamarcoot brevirostrum is represented by isolated teeth and three partial dentaries and appears to have been short-snouted with an estimated mass of 920 g. Phylogenetic analyses place K. brevirostrum in a clade with extant Australian bandicoots and the extinct Madju, but potentially exclude the extant New Guinean bandicoots. Morphometric analysis infers close similarity between K. brevirostrum and species of Galadi in both size and rostral length. They, thus, potentially occupied compatible ecological niches with competitive exclusion perhaps explaining geographical segregation between these broadly coeval lineages.
