Morphology and Significance of Transverse Ridges (De Geer Moraines) Adjacent to the Moray Firth,NE Scotland

Abstract

High-resolution NEXTMap digital surface models and aerial photographs are used to map suites of transverse ridges at Tarbat Ness and to the west of Elgin, along the margins of the Moray Firth in northeast Scotland. Based on their morphology, configuration and location, interpret these landforms as De Geer moraines which formed at or near former grounding line positions of the Moray Firth palaeo-ice stream. The Tarbat Ness De Geer moraines almost certainly formed at a marine margin. Reaching altitudes of 55 m above present OD, these landforms may provide one of the highest geomorphological indicators for former relative sea level in mainland Britain. Evidence from surrounding landforms and sediments suggest that the ridges formed between c. 15 000–18 000 cal yrs BP, indicating that a significant fall in relative sea level may have taken place prior to an ice margin re-advance in the Moray Firth, known as the Ardersier Oscillation.     

Current Literature

Two Canadian scholars, the former a specialist on St. Petersburg's evolution and urban fabric, explore linkages between population change, housing availability, and business development in central-city St. Petersburg during the late 1990s. These phenomena are viewed within the context of the St. Petersburg Strategic Plan, adopted in late 1997 as a guide to the city's post-Soviet development, and in light of the findings of a sample survey of central St. Petersburg's citizens designed to elicit information on social class structure and quality-of-life concerns. DESIGN OF UTILITY GRIDS IN NORTHERN USSR

The construction and maintenance of water, sewage, and heating lines in permafrost poses one of the greatest city-building problems faced in northern environments. The design and installation of a modern utility grid in Noril'sk, northern USSR, provides a good example of Soviet civil engineering strategy on permafrost. Early failures in combined underground installation of lines in reinforced concrete conduits (utilidors) forced design changes responsible for the present, more technically advanced system. Cogeneration of heat and electricity and the “closed-perimeter” building ensemble have potential applications in utilities planning in Arctic North America.     

Sino-Japanese strategic relations: will rivalry lead to confrontation?

This article analyses the strategic dynamics of the Sino-Japanese relationship and argues that the potential for confrontation between China and Japan has been exaggerated. There is an underlying tendency in much of the literature to treat the emergence of rivalry between China and Japan since the end of the cold war as synonymous with an inevitable drift towards bilateral strategic confrontation. This article argues that Beijing and Tokyo are better placed to manage the strategic dimension of their bilateral relationship than many analysts have been willing to acknowledge thus far. To test this argument, the article examines two prominent case studies that lie at the heart of the contemporary and future Sino-Japanese bilateral strategic relationship: the territorial dispute over the East China Sea and Japan's virtual nuclear weapons capability.
