Geographies of Scale in International Rugby Union

Argentina has emerged as one of the top ten rugby teams in the world and became the first country from outside of the eight foundation unions to compete in the semi‐final of a world cup competition in 2007. This paper assesses the geographies of scale in international rugby and considers Argentina's place within the contemporary game. It puts forward an analysis of the above within a framework shaped by the professionalisation, postmodernisation, and globalisation of the sport. The notion of scale, initially complemented by an outline of core and periphery, attempts to tease out the spatial isolations surrounding professional rugby since 1995. The work concludes by assessing what the proposed inclusion of Argentina in an extended Tri‐Nations competition will mean to the wider international rugby setting.     

Bridging anthropology and its archives: an analysis from the Smithsonian's National Anthropological Archives

Much has been written about the need to open up archives as part of the decolonial turn and decolonizing methodologies. What does this look like in practice for anthropology? Despite increasing interest in archives and ‘the archival turn’ among anthropologists, our study at the National Anthropological Archives (NAA) found that anthropologists who use archives in their work lack familiarity with organizational principles and histories that would help them navigate and gain access to these records, as well as critique them. Beyond reporting this recent research, we posit that the disconnect between archives and anthropology is not isolated to the NAA or the US, but is pervasive in the discipline. In sharing this work, we hope to inspire other similar institutional moves and to promote archival education and scholarly engagement in anthropology and its training programmes.     

TRADE IN GREEK DECORATED POTTERY

Summary. The suggestions that Greek decorated pottery was cheap, and that in trade overseas it can be regarded as little more than 'saleable ballast', are refuted by demonstration of its relative value, by weight and by volume, beside that of other commodities for which comparable evidence is available. From this its profitability may also be deduced.     

A TIME OF CHANGE: THE IRON AGE TO ROMAN MONETARY TRANSITION IN EAST ANGLIA

Summary. The majority of Icenian coin hoards have traditionally been dated to the historical events of the Boudican revolt. This paper removes that link and examines the material using classical numismatic methods to show that far from all being of one date they represent a series of depositions throughout the period of the client kingdom: AD 43–60/1. It also demonstrates the gradual increase in use of Roman coins within that kingdom alongside the local Iron Age series.
