“The third man” — David's heroes in 2 Sam 23,8–39

Abstract

The basic meaning of the word is “three”, “third”. Besides this, the word also possesses two specialized meanings, namely “chariot soldier” and “officer of high rank”. The evident discrepancy between these two meanings has occasioned considerable interest among scholars (e.g, Thenius, Elliger, Hertzberg, Margalith, Mastin, Na'aman, Schley).

In the contribution at hand it has been shown that the was a trained soldier who did not belong to the standard crew of a war chariot However, it was possible to assign him temporarily to the chariots in order to raise their effectiveness. The warriors in question could also be transported in chariots as third men, in addition to the standard crew of two. It is from this practice that the term “third man”, originated. It was also from this military élite that the king picked his chiefs and adjutants. Gradually the word came to mean not only a specially trained soldier, but also the king's adjutant. The meaning “shield bearer”, which has often been suggested for has nothing to support it.     

Training ESD change agents through geography: designing the curriculum of a master’s program with emphasis on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

To achieve a deep and wide implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into all forms of education, the capacity of educators and trainers needs to be increased. This paper describes the curricular architecture of a master’s program in Geography with an emphasis on ESD. Based on a first feedback given by graduates, the paper discusses both strengths and weaknesses of the program.     

Obituary. Wolfgang Scharfe (1942–2003)

At the turn of the twentieth century, a popular mania developed around the idea that Mars was inhabited by intelligent beings. This obsession was originally based in the science of the time, but it outlasted astronomers' certainty regarding the red planet's conditions of habitability. Cartography was vital to the popular construction of Mars as an inhabited world and created a powerful landscape icon that differed significantly from the observations of astronomers. Acceptance of a Martian civilization began to wane only when cartography's status as an objective representational format was weakened by new photographic technology in the early 1900s. Although the processes and formats of cartography are rarely considered primary factors in the Mars mania, they were integral to the origin, development and expiration of the conceptualization of Mars as a world that was possibly inhabited.     

The Assyrian Evidence: A Reply to Salibi's Questions Regarding Assyrian Sources for their Campaigns in Palestine and the Existence of a Bît Ḫumria in Palestine in the Iron II

Abstract

In this paper the famous saying in Jer 31,29–30 is discussed taking the images of sour fruit and numb teeth as parts of metaphorical language. The two images should be classified as parts of two different root-metaphors: “sour fruit” falls under the tree “you are what you eat”. “Numb teeth” stand in the field of “demolition and ruination”. Their unexpected merger together with the aspect of time—as referred to by the nouns “fathers” and “(grand) children”—suggests that two concepts are communicated: (1) the idea of postponed retribution, and (2) tragic fatalism, The abrogation of the saying should be interpreted as an indication that “in the days to come” people can no longer blame others for their wrongdoings. Within the historical context of exile and return, the abrogation of the saying should not be interpreted as a sign of the rise of individualism, but as a feature of a symbol system that stresses personal responsibility as part of Israel's identity within the immense Persian Empire.     

The Poeta Saxo at Paderborn: episcopal authority and Carolingian rule in late ninth‐century Saxony

This paper argues that the Poeta Saxo's epic poem about Charlemagne was composed at the bishopric of Paderborn as part of a wider literary programme that included both the Translatio sancti Liborii and the Vita sancti Liborii. Near the close of the ninth century, when Paderborn's renown and resources were at their lowest ebb, these three works articulated an image of episcopal authority, touted the pre‐eminence of Paderborn, and made a bid for royal patronage.     

Radiocarbon measurements

In the present series we have dated two samples from a previously unknown pilework E. of the Kastelholm castle, two other logs from old layers to the S. of the castle, two charcoal samples from a layer E. of the castle, four samples of various materials from a ditch SE of the castle, and one sample from outside the NE part of the castle. All the samples were carefully pre‐treated, δ¹³C normalization performed and the measurements extended to reach a statistical uncertainty of usually less than ±60 years. The results are given in radiocarbon years and calibrated.
