LEAD ISOTOPIC ANALYSIS OF EIGHTEENTH‐DYNASTY EGYPTIAN EYEPAINTS AND LEAD ANTIMONATE COLOURANTS*

New lead isotopic analyses are presented for lead antimonate coloured glass and faience from Amarna in Middle Egypt and dated to around 1350 BC. When compared to existing data, these suggest that Gebel Zeit on the Red Sea coast of Egypt may be the source for some of the lead antimonate colourants used in Egypt and possibly for the galena kohls of Eighteenth‐Dynasty date as well.

Summary. The unique carving of an armed human figure on a capstone in the Déhus passage grave, Guernsey, has been known for some 70 years but has hitherto eluded parallels and explanation. With the stimulus of recent researches in Brittany, it is now possible to suggest that here too is an example oficonoclasm and incorporation associated with the inception of the Neolithic and the formative stages of megalithic traditions.

COMPOSITIONAL VARIABILITY IN COLOURLESS ROMAN VESSEL GLASS

A statistical re-analysis is undertaken of 118 inductively coupled plasma spectrometry analyses of Romano-British glass specimens found in excavations at Colchester. There are four vessel types present, some of which are associated with chronologically distinct periods. Previous research has suggested little difference in the mean composition of different types. The present paper shows that there are interesting differences in the variation of compositions within types, with some showing much greater compositional stability then others. Some possible models to explain this phenomenon are discussed.
