Mandibular hypodontia and osteoarthritis in prehistoric bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in eastern Washington State,USA

Mandibular hypodontia of the p2 was found to occur in 3 out of 21 individual prehistoric Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) from Moses Coulee Cave in eastern Washington State, similar to its frequency of occurrence in modern bighorn. There is no evidence of lumpy jaw (mandibular osteomyelitis) in the Moses Coulee Cave collection. Evidence from Moses Coulee Cave aligns with the hypothesis that low frequencies of hypodontia and lumpy jaw occur in healthy, evolutionarily old (maintenance) populations in order to maintain the occlusal area and thus maximise efficiency of food procurement and processing. Osteoarthritis was found to occur in 1 out of 70 individual Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) astragali in the Moses Coulee Cave collection. This prevalence is unsurprising given a population dominated by prime‐age individuals. Osteoarthritis was likely selected against given that individuals must be agile to effectively use rugged terrain to escape predation and as a general measure suggests a healthy population. Protecting the sterling area: The chifley government's response to multilateralism 1945–9

In 1942 the Australian Labor government accepted multilateralism in the form of Article VII of the Anglo‐American Mutual Aid Agreement. Some historians have argued that this was the beginning of a turning point in Australia's economic history: a movement away from the declining British empire towards the United States. I have two arguments in this article. The first is that Labor's acceptance of multilateralism did not lead, at least in the first five years after the war, to a deterioration in Australia's economic relationship with the United Kingdom. The reverse was true. Because of the acute shortage of dollars in the postwar world, Australia was obliged to expand her trade within the sterling area and to discriminate against American goods. The second argument is that although the Chifley government supported multilateralism as a theoretical concept, it opposed vigorously what it regarded as the Americans’ precipitate moves to dismantle the sterling area. The Chifley government sought to protect this cooperative system of exchange and import controls as a bulwark against the dollar shortage and against the possibility of a depression spreading from America.     

Outbidding to Radical Nationalists: Minority Policy in Estonia, 1988–1993

Abstract. Given the pressure exerted by Russia and the international alter focused on Estonia as a result, why did Estonia opt to deny citizenship to the maji of its Russian-speaking population and to disenfranchise them at a time v decisions about the basic structure of the state were being made? Com explanations for radical policy towards other ethnic groups focus on histo animosity or changes in demographics. However, I argue that these explanations insufficient to explain the changes in Estonian policy over time. Instead I focus 01 political process, dividing the Estonian drive for independence into three stags discuss the increasing relaxation of the political constraints on outbidding to rai nationalists. The conclusion examines the impact of Estonia's policies on et relations and discusses the implications for domestic and international policy.
