Conceptions of Space and Crime in the Punitive Neoliberal City

The entrenchment of neoliberalism in the United States has coincided with an unprecedented expansion of punishment practices that intensify social divisions rooted in class and race. We explore the political culture of this hyperpunitiveness through a discussion of two popularized explanations for urban crime: broken windows and situational crime prevention. These popular criminological theories help legitimate the deepening of social and spatial divisions. They also rest their precepts upon the foundation of a particular geographic imagination. We use this paper to reveal and critique the core assumptions about space upon which each of these theories critically relies. We suggest that each theory understands society–space interactions too simplistically to provide comprehensive insight into the dynamics of landscape construction and interpretation. We argue further that the logics and practices of broken windows and situational crime prevention possess significant elective affinities with social dynamics characteristic of neoliberalism. For these reasons, these popularized criminologies both reflect and reinforce the processes through which neoliberalism exacerbates social differences.     

The Changing Geographies of Power and Control in Rural Service Provision: Recent Restructuring Within the Australian Tractor Dealership System

Over the past few years a considerable body of research has illuminated the changing geographies of service provision in rural Australia. Mostly, this work has emphasised the quantitative aspects of restructuring, by way of documenting numerical reductions in service delivery points and their implications for local employment and service access. In this paper, an examination of recent restructuring within the dealership system for high‐horsepower tractors underlines that these quantitative changes also intersect with qualitative shifts to the character of service delivery. Interviews with 31 participants in the tractor dealership system of Central‐West New South Wales reveal the recent evolution of a producer‐driven supply chain in which two dominant, multinational, tractor‐machinery companies have sought to exercise tighter control over customer relations through the restructuring of franchise agreements with dealers. There has been a resultant demise of the independent dealership, and its replacement by a system of standardised, company‐affiliated outlets operated by franchise holders. Hence, the spatial restructuring of this industry represents the surface manifestations of corporate strategies in which large economic entities are re‐organising their interests in light of globalised theatres of competition and profit. In this sense, the tractor‐dealership system is emblematic of changes to power and control in rural service provision as the franchise models propagated by large corporate interests increasingly subsume the small‐business sector activities of Australia's rural towns.     

Stand der Internationalisierung von kleineren Unternehmen aus den Ziel-2-Gebieten Nordrhein- Westfalens

Das Projekt "Europa-Fit" unterstützt kleinere Unternehmen aus den Ziel-2-Gebieten in Nordrhein-Westfalen bei der Erschließung neuer Absatz-, Beschaffungs- und Kooperationsmöglichkeiten innerhalb der Europäischen Union. Durch Beratung, Qualifizierung und Coaching werden ausgewählte Kleinbetriebe auf ihrem Weg in den EU-Binnenmarkt individuell begleitet. Zur Bedarfsermittlung und Auswahl geeigneter Betriebe wurde im Vorfeld von den Partnerorganisationen—dem Rationalisierungs- und Innovationszentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen e.V. (RKW NRW), der Landesgewerbeförderungsstelle des nordrhein-westfälischen Handwerks e.V. (LGH) und dem Zentrum für Innovation und Technik in Nordrhein- Westfalen GmbH (ZENIT)—im November 2001 eine schriftliche Unternehmensbefragung von kleineren Unternehmen bis ca. 70 Mitarbeitern durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Befragung sollen in dem folgenden Artikel zusammenfassend dargestellt werden. Den Abschluß bildet ein kurzer Abriss der ersten Erfahrungen, die im Projekt Europa-Fit gemacht wurden.

Design and evaluation of an Open Web Platform cartography lab curriculum

Recent shifts in web map technology away from proprietary software and toward development on the Open Web Platform have increased the number and complexity of technical skills needed to do cartography on the Web. Web-based cartography curricula likewise must be adapted to prepare geography, cartography, and GIS students with the skills needed to make use of open source technology. This paper describes the design and evaluation of a novel curriculum for the laboratory component of a web mapping course offered by a university geography department. We drew from constructivist educational theory to create a scaffolded and spiralled lab curriculum that builds on prior understanding and progressively increases student independence and confidence. We evaluated the success of the new curriculum through an instructor log, student feedback on assignments, and an exit survey. The evaluation revealed significant growth in student abilities and confidence in the use of Open Web Platform-based mapping tools as a result of the curriculum scaffolding. This research provides a methodology for designing and evaluating curriculum around highly technical skills that are increasingly in demand in research, education, and industry careers.
