The Art of Geographical Analysis

Professor Arthur Getis was a prominent geographical analysis researcher and proponent. His research in geographical analysis was broad, with an eye on theoretical developments and application-oriented details. However, there was so much more. His active participation and engaged discussion at symposia and conferences, in sessions, during breaks and less formally over drinks or a meal, stand out, even postretirement. His service and mentoring in many forms too were invaluable. In what follows, an overview of his career and contributions are provided. Additionally, observations and broader significance are offered as a set of rules to live by based on my three decades of interaction with Professor Getis.     

Strategic planning for multicommunity rural development: Insights from Northern Ireland

This paper examines progress being made in the sphere of community‐led rural development in Northern Ireland. Multicommunity development practice carried out by the authors using a transactive model of strategic planning is reported. This case study is located in the borderlands of Ireland, in an area where contested traditions of culture and political allegiance are deeply rooted. The analysis explores, inter alia, the tensions associated with community group formation, the difficulties in winning consensus and how these problems were addressed, the origin and selection of projects, and the first steps towards implementation. By way of conclusion a number of key issues of arguably wider interest are identified: engaging in strategic planning, supporting multicommunity activity and forging new partnership arrangements.     

The European union's support for new technology‐based firms: An assessment of the first three years of the European seed capital fund scheme

In 1988, the European Commission launched a pilot programme, the European Seed Capital Fund Scheme, designed to create 24 new seed capital funds in the 12 member states and to increase the availability of equity finance to innovative start‐up and early‐stage enterprises. The findings of a pan‐European assessment carried out in the spring of 1992 on 21 of the 22 supported funds and 40 of their investee companies are presented. The actions of the funds have allowed additional resources to be directed to young technology‐based firms. However, the research findings also suggest that the majority of supported funds are under‐capitalized which will result in major problems of financial viability in the medium term. The research also questions the sufficiency of supply side policies alone to address issues of regional ‘equity gaps’ particularly related to the support for NTBFs within Europe.
