The hypothesis that the principal varieties of Middle Paleolithic scrapers reflect varying degrees of resharpening and rejuvenation, rather than discrete emic types, has generated considerably controversy over the past decade. While there have been certain misunderstandings surrounding the proposed models of scraper reduction, this controversy also reflects different approaches taken by prehistorians in interpreting lithic artifacts. Placing the notion of scraper reduction in the context of lithic processes generally known as the Frison Effect, this article presents the background and intellectual context of this interpretation and attempts to clarify the models themselves and their test implications. It also reviews and summarizes data generated by several independent tests of the hypothesis and presents new data bearing on this question.  相似文献

River basin management activities are often carried out in the context of real or perceived environmental change. Views of environmental change provided by the oral tradition are compared with histories of change reconstructed from the historical documentary record for the Nogoa River, Queensland, and the Avon River, Victoria. Quite different perspectives on the nature and causes of river channel change are provided by the two types of sources. River basin managers appear to have generally adopted the views provided by the more easily accessible oral tradition, leading to management strategies that are not necessarily justifiable in the light of the documentary history.  相似文献

Chemical analysis of Early Iron Age sherds from Cyprus and the Levant using atomic absorption spectrometry shows that Black-on-Red ware was manufactured only in Cyprus. Two types of fabric are isolated, calcareous and non-calcareous, and their technological significance discussed. The presence of trade links between the Cypriot sites of Kition and Amathus and sites in the Levant is suggested.  相似文献

When Georges Cabanis presented his views to the National Institute of France in 1797 on the physiological basis of human psychology, he introduced the concept that phosphorus was of special importance in the workings of the brain. The presence of phosphorus in that organ had only recently been described by A F Fourcroy, a finding that impressed Cabanis because of the association of light (phosphorescence) and heat (evolved during oxidation) with the element. Furthermore, he hypothesised that the electrical activity of the brain represented a parallel and interacting system with that of phosphorus. Cabanis was one of the leading exponents of "ideology", the principal school of philosophy at the time of the French Revolution. Ideology promoted the systematisation of knowledge in every sphere--social, scientific and medical, for example-- and Cabanis's views about cerebral phosphorus evolved from those teachings.  相似文献

This paper discusses the gender and generational politics of the 1956 ban on clitoridectomy in Meru, Kenya. Historically, clitoridectomy became an object of official concern in central Kenya in the 1920s, which prompted the Meru Local Native Council to pass resolutions prohibiting excision without the consent of the girl, limiting the severity of the operation and requiring the registration of the female circumcisers. These resolutions, however, proved largely ineffective. Since the approval and implementation of the Njuri Ncheke of Meru in 1956, which unanimously banned clitoridectomy, a great number of men, women, and girls have been charged by the African courts with defying the ban. In the absence of specialists performing excision, several adolescents resorted to excising themselves in form of retaliation. The administrative context within which officials attempted to regulate clitoridectomy in the 1920s and 1930s differed markedly from the 1956 ban. A shift from one of indirect rule to a post-war development agenda through the elaboration of economic and social reforms was also observed. The 1956 ban was much of a challenge to the relations of seniority among women as to relations of subordination between men and women. Furthermore, ban analysis also revealed the link between gender and generation shaped and limited the more interventionist policies of the post-World War II colonial state. Clitoridectomy and infibulation are now considered grounds for political asylum, and the legality of these practices among the African immigrant population continues to be debated within international conferences.  相似文献

Albert Wilmarth was an influential physician in nineteenth century America. His works in asylum management, eugenics and neuropathology were intimately interrelated, and his conception of people with Down's syndrome and how they should be treated were largely a product of these relationships. While many of his activities may be perceived in a negative way today, he should be credited with having discovered vasculitis in the brains of people with Down's syndrome during his pathological studies, a condition which is now perceived as autoimmune.  相似文献
