In 1902, a portion of a juvenile human frontal bone was excavated by Armand Viré from the cave of Lacave in the Dordogne valley of southwestern France. The specimen is clearly from an Upper Palaeolithic context, although problems in interpreting the stratigraphy and postdepositional history in the cave render it essentially impossible to determine whether it is from a Magdalenian or Solutrean context. The morphology of the specimen is modern, as would be expected considering its relatively late Upper Palaeolithic context. Examination of aspects of brow ridge and frontal sinus development, as well as metopic suture obliteration, allows estimation of a developmental age of approximately 7–8 years for the specimen. Sex is indeterminate, and there is no pathology present. Apart from serving as an example of the problems of interpreting fragmentary skeletal remains from early 20th century excavations, the Lacave frontal represents one of the relatively few subadult cranial specimens known from the European Upper Palaeolithic. Family is underresearched in the study of the medieval Islamic world. Among historians, it is an uncontroversial topic, except for ideologically driven arguments about the cultural influence of Christian women in Muslim households in Islamic Spain. The Muslim conquests must, however, have brought numerous different models of family and kinship into contact or conflict throughout the conquered territories; nevertheless, conceptualizations of family have remained undiversified, intuitive and naturalistic. A sociological approach to the role of families in creating urban elites of religious scholars has supported an influential theory of the latters’ importance in Muslim public life, while the Jewish households documented in the Cairo Geniza have provided images of urban domesticity. There has been limited discussion of rural families, of types of families and kinship groups and of tribalism. Some family‐related topics, such as marriage, children, slavery, gender, sexuality, or women in Islam, have been studied under separate labels, but not within a broader approach that connects family members’ domestic roles with the family’s public functions and with wider historical questions. In the medieval sources, family held an important place in symbolic thought and in the literary imagination, as well as in religious and historical writing, political theory, and dynastic propaganda. While most historians continue to discuss medieval families in Islamic lands as collectivities and social vehicles, the investigation of subjective attitudes to family and other group relationships, against the backdrop of the notions of selfhood and agency found in biographical and imaginative writings, is an emerging trend among literary scholars.  相似文献

Doña Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer, known as ‘La Quintrala,’ a seventeenth-century aristocratic woman of mixed ancestry accused of torture, witchcraft, and murder, has persisted as a recurring figure in the Chilean imaginary. While literary representations of this figure have been well explored, this article contributes an examination of two visual narratives, paying particular attention to the manner in which genre and context influence the repurposing of this violent woman: the 1986 teleserie La Quintrala, produced by Chile's state-owned television station (TVN), and the Chilean newspaper Las últimas noticias's 2008 comic ‘La Quintrala y el Cristo de Mayo.’ The teleserie, a product of the Pinochet era, positions her as an antithesis to the ideal Chilean woman, simultaneously denying her agency and condemning her. The comic echoes the rhetoric of the Concertación governments as it prominently links La Quintrala's downfall and redemption to the genesis of modern Chile at the cost of her distinctive racial and gendered characteristics. Ultimately, each work employs the structure of confession to recall her crimes while rejecting the female agency and racially mixed heritage La Quintrala represents.  相似文献
