Abstract A careful reading of Caritas in Veritate shows it to be framed and permeated by two principles. The first is that human persons in their consciences and deeds are the principal agents of economic and political life, whether directly in interpersonal relations or mediated through their work in and for institutions. The second is that human persons as citizens are best prepared to promote “integral human development” and “the common good” when they are urged on by charity or love that is lived in truth. In these respects Caritas in Veritate is a clear continuation of the line of thought that Benedict developed in his earlier encyclicals Deus Caritas Est and Spe Salvi, and before that in his theological writings as Joseph Ratzinger. Benedict's work thus underscores the need modern societies and political communities have for charity, and thus for faith and for hope. We explicate this aspect of Benedict's political vision throughout this essay, anticipating and beginning to respond to some objections to the thesis that politics even in a secular age requires theological virtues to flourish. 相似文献

AbstractThe article examines the process of promoting, with a view to safeguarding, the centuries-old Singing and Praying Bands living tradition, an African American musical and spiritual expression that is distinctive to the Chesapeake Bay region of the US. Discussed within the context of US public folklore, the process is understood as a co-intervention, representing an active partnership between the Bands’ community and public folklorists (including the authors) in attempting to reach new members as a means of keeping it alive. The article underscores the need for ‘bottom-up’ approaches in safeguarding living cultural traditions, bringing to light the potential strengths of public folklore work and the benefits its theories and methodologies can bring to the intangible cultural heritage discourse. Moreover, it analyses how community agency has been exercised, and community needs accommodated, through the dialogue-driven, collaborative intervention process. It also investigates how a nuanced view of ‘authenticity’ has been shaped, with regard to changes the living tradition has undergone, and is currently understood by those who embody it. 相似文献

The full-relief lime plaster sculptures of the funerary crypt of Palenque, Mexico, suffer from advanced decay due to the cave-like environment in which they are located. Macroscopically, the sculptures have a soft consistency, but there is a hard crust over their surface. Some of the features observed by microscopy are the neomorphism of minerals as a consequence of permanent water seepage, and the formation of wide shrinkage cracks as a result of drying. The mineral hydromagnesite Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O was identified by X-ray diffraction and microscopy; its relation with the shrinkage observed in the samples and its possible role in the decay of the sculptures are discussed in this paper. A short discussion is also made about the likely raw materials that were employed to manufacture the sculptures. 相似文献
