Indigenous Research and Archaeology: Transformative Practices in/with/for the Ngarrindjeri Community
Christopher L. Wilson 《Archaeologies》2007,3(3):320-334
The relationships between Indigenous peoples and archaeologists in Australia have consisted of conflict, consultation and
collaboration. The literature looks at very little the roles and challenges met by Indigenous archaeologists and the issues
that arise as a result of working between two different knowledge systems. This paper therefore will discuss the question
of how archaeologists could modify their practice for better answering the Indigenous communities and treats this particular
question by presenting my own work among the Ngarrindjeri nation of southeast South Australia. By the means of a lived experiment
of conducting research with/in/for my community, I will consider the effect of the personal identity related to community
stories while also examining how the knowledge of the interior can be at the same time complex but very significant for the
development of archaeology.

The ~100 ka Middle Stone Age levels at Blombos Cave, southern Cape, South Africa, contain numerous rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) remains. It is often ambiguous to interpret rock hyrax remains from archaeological deposits deriving from cave and shelter sites in southern Africa as the agent or agents of accumulation may be difficult to establish. In this paper, the different taphonomic signatures separating anthropogenic from natural accumulations at Blombos Cave are considered. The analysis indicates that although a few specimens show evidence for raptor and carnivore accumulation, there is also substantial evidence that suggests humans preyed on these small mammals during different times of the year.

Empirical aspects of the movement of strontium through the food chain suggest that the level of bone strontium can be used as an indicator of the percentage of meat in human diet. In general, skeletal remains from agricultural peoples are expected to have high bone strontium levels relative to hunter-gatherers from the same geographical region because plants contain relatively higher amounts of strontium when compared with animal products. The results of the study described in this paper, however, indicate that the inclusion of molluscs as a component of the diet may produce the opposite of the expected strontium values. Burials from an Archaic (c. 2500 BC) hunting-gathering population excavated from Luo25, an archaeological site in northern Alabama, USA, exhibit a mean bone strontium level (
atomic absorption;
neutron activation) that is higher than the mean level from an agricultural Mississippian (c. AD 1400) population (
atomic absorption;
neutron activation) that was buried at the same site. The samples were analysed by two techniques (atomic absorption spectrometry and neutron activation analysis) and the results compared favourably; therefore, the results can be accepted as valid rather than being due to technique error. We propose that the ingestion of molluscs, whose meat is known to contain large amounts of strontium, has produced this reversal from expected results.

This chapter addresses the essential issues in evaluating works that use linguistic evidence in reconstructing the past. Linguistics has its own well-developed body of theory and practice. Its evidence is subject to rigorous validation. Any work claiming to infer history from linguistics must validate its evidence against a systematic phonological reconstruction, and it must provide that validating apparatus or else direct the reader to where that apparatus is to be found. Scholars do not get to pick and choose among the archaeological data to support their ideas. Neither does one get to pick and choose or to engage in special pleading to make the linguistic evidence fit one’s prior notions. The chapter illustrates the requirements of linguistic reconstruction by laying out the system of the Eastern Cushitic language group and showing how to apply the system, step by step, to reconstruct the presence of a particular component of the proto-Eastern Cushitic economy.
