La re-escritura de la novela romántica argentina del siglo XIX: de Lucio V. Mansilla a Florencia Bonelli en Indias blancas

Contemporary Latin American retro-foundational or neo-romantic narratives allow scholars to reanalyze the nineteenth century's hegemonic discourse. They also provide an opportunity to rethink how social classes, ethnicities, and genders interacted during the past. Argentinean writers are rewriting some novels by authors of previous eras to raise points about national identity and historiography. Indias blancas and Indias blancas: La vuelta del ranquel by Florencia Bonelli are based on Una excursión a los indios ranqueles by Lucio Victorio Mansilla. Mansilla's provocative and long forgotten novel was brought to a new life through the re-examination of the Conquest/s of the Desert, during which the native population of the Argentinean Pampa was gradually exterminated. Although Bonelli's work presents some similar scenarios and themes as Mansilla's novel, the two volumes of Indias blancas parody the époque representation of the virginal, flimsy, powerless, and self-denying Creole women and the vicious savages of the Pampas. In addition, the contemporary narrative satirizes the Creole's civility and paternalism toward the indigenous population, whose displacement benefited the latifundia (large estate) system in Argentina.     

Chance, creativity, and the discovery of the nerve growth factor

This essay analyzes the history of the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) discovery, relating some of the principles of the theory of scientific creativity to the cognitive and personal qualities of the scientists that participated in the discovery, particularly Rita Levi-Montalcini and Viktor Hamburger. The discovery of NGF is especially attractive for the history of science as it involves chance, luck, creativity, and some extraordinary scientists.     

Radiocarbon and U-series dating of the endemic deer Praemegaceros cazioti (Depéret) from “Grotta Juntu”, Sardinia

Radiocarbon and U-series methods (²³⁰Th/U and ²³¹Pa/²³⁵U) for absolute age determination have been applied to some fossil samples from Grotta Juntu, in North Eastern Sardinia (Italy). The remains belong to the endemic deer species Praemegaceros cazioti, which is here represented by an almost complete skeleton. The three dating methods lead to concordant ages of about 7500 years BP, indicating that the skeleton was maintained as closed system after burial. Taking into consideration these results, Praemegaceros cazioti from Grotta Juntu is now the youngest representative of this species in Sardinia.     

Ushnus of the Inca provincial region: An analysis of two ceremonial platforms from Inca sites in Catamarca (Argentina)

The Inca polity deployed a variety of strategies in the establishment of imperial relations with the local communities of the southern provinces. These strategies included the translation of symbols materialized in architectural structures. In this sense, the ceremonial platforms denominated ushnus were spaces with particular significance and high hierarchy.     

La destrucción y la creación en Los siameses y Flores de papel

Many Hispanic American plays of the twentieth century, such as Flores de papel and Los siameses, among others, depict the social-economic imbalance visible among the different social classes. This inequality is seen as inevitable, forcing the working class first to destroy elements of the status quo, in order then to construct a new reality. Thus it attempts to produce radical changes, including the alteration or reconstruction of the class system itself, through destruction-construction of the surrounding reality. Hence, the dramatists, considering the role of the theater and of the writer, present these struggles and class discrepancies in an attempt to find a solution to the problems of their characters' social environment.     

Further developments in molecular sex assignment: a blind test of 18th and 19th century human skeletons

The identification of sex in human remains recovered from archaeological locations is important in order to understand the social and biological structure of past societies, and to reconstruct past population demographic events. Sex determination is usually based on morphological traits of the skeletons, with the drawback that most methods do not apply to juveniles and require well preserved remains. In cases where morphological methods cannot be used, or are ambiguous, methods of molecular sexing systems are an alternative. In this methodological study we tested and validated the accuracy and usefulness of a molecular sexing method based on the amelogenin gene using pyrosequencing. We did this in a double blind study of documented 18th and 19th century human remains.
