Shipwreck sites are open systems, allowing the exchange of material and energy across system boundaries. Physical processes dominate site formation at fully submerged wreck sites, and in turn influence chemical and biological processes at many stages of site formation. Scouring presents a fundamental yet poorly understood threat to wreck sites, and the processes and patterns of erosion and deposition of sediments and artefacts at wreck sites are poorly understood. Laboratory and field-based experiments to study these phenomena are time-consuming and expensive. In this study, open-source computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations are used to model the processes and patterns of flow, erosion, and deposition at fully submerged wreck sites. Simulations successfully capture changes in the flow regime in the environment of the wreck as a function of incidence angle, including flow contraction, the generation of horseshoe vortices in front of the wreck, the formation of lee-wake vortices behind the structure, and increased turbulence and shear stress in the lee of the wreck site. CFD simulations demonstrate that horseshoe vortices control scour on the upstream face of structure but play a minimal role in scouring on the lee side. Lee-wake vortices dominate behind the structure, with low-pressure zones in the lee of the wreck capturing flow. The amplification and reduction of wall shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy in the lee of the vessel form distinctive patterns in relation to flow direction, with areas of amplified and reduced wall shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy demonstrating excellent spatial correlation with erosional and depositional patterns developed at real-world wreck sites.  相似文献

A data-based procedure is presented to develop spectra-compatible time-history records that are based on the dominant probabilistic features of an ensemble of records corresponding to the non-stationary stochastic phenomena of interest (e.g., earthquakes, wind loads, etc). The method requires a statistically significant collection of time-history records that are used to construct the associated covariance kernel of the random process. Subsequently, orthogonal decomposition approaches are used to determine the dominant eigenvectors of the covariance matrix, and these vectors are then linearly combined, with an adjustable amplitude-scale and phase-shift, to determine, via a nonlinear optimization scheme (employing a combination of stochastic and deterministic approaches), a time-history record that matches the target spectrum within a specified error bound. The utility of this approach is demonstrated with several collections of earthquake records from different regions of the world (Japan, Los Angeles, and San Francisco) that are then used to match various spectra widely used in seismic design applications. Issues that impact the selection of the bases vectors to construct the optimum spectra-matching record are discussed, and guidelines are provided for successful implementation of the proposed methodology.  相似文献

So long as the main forces holding together the postwar welfare state remained in place, the range of significant social policy options was only marginal or incremental. In that context the history of Australian political culture was plausibly construed as a utilitarian, pragmatic affair lacking significant contests of ideas, dogmas or principles. This paper examines the origins of this historiography in the birth of political science in the 1950s and suggests that the end of the cold war and the destabilising of the welfare state has exposed the limits of its serviceability. A larger appreciation of the history of Australian political thought—once associated with the theme of ‘initiative and resistance'—needs to be recovered, especially if political scientists are to make a more creative contribution to the now fundamental social policy debates over the role of the state in the economy.  相似文献

To date, the geographical implications of the role played by the Orange Order in the settlement of Ontario have largely been ignored by comparison with the role played by the Catholic Church in Quebec. The origins and processes of the transfer of Orangeism from Ireland are examined. The spread of the movement inside Ontario and the role it played in the lives of the settlers is related to the settlement process in a period of rapid social as well as spatial change.  相似文献
