MEDIEVAL COPPER ALLOY PRODUCTION AND WEST AFRICAN BRONZE ANALYSES - PART II

The first part of this work (Craddock 1985) critically examined the uses to which analyses of West African metalwork have been put and suggested other possible significance against the background of increased knowledge of the smelting technology and alloys used in Europe and the Middle East during the last 1500 years. The second part is devoted to the composition and metalworking techniques of some of the bronzes and brasses from Nigeria and the implications for their art history.     

Land Evaluation for Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication in Northern Australia

This paper outlines the methods and results of a study to assess the degree of difficulty imposed by the landscape on livestock mustering in Northern Australia. This was undertaken as part of a larger collaborative study between officers of the then Bureau of Animal Health, the Bureau of Agricultural Economics and CSIRO to ascertain likely costs and benefits of the Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Eradication campaign in Northern Australia. A sample of 1806 grid cells was used to describe and analyse the landscape of the study area. Data for each of the landscape components (landform, lithology, vegetative cover and water features) were evaluated for the degree of difficulty they imposed on livestock mustering and the results analysed. The results are reported by states and study area.     

Office location in Australian metropolitan areas: centralisation or dispersal?

As office activities have become even more centralised in A ustralia's largest cities they have also become more suburbanised. Taking account of the recent expansion of intermediate (mostly office-based) services and their locational requirements, this article examines the existing and potential strategic planning policies for achieving a better organised, more equitable, and efficient distribution of office activities in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. Preference for policies based on suburban office centres represents a convergence of ideas. Some of the factors which make it difficult to implement these policies are examined. The role of the CBD and adjacent office areas, however, should not be underrated given the established patterns of office location behaviour and the changing structure and origin of demand for non-local market metropolitan offices.
