Level IV of Molodova I, an open-air Middle Paleolithic site in the Ukraine has been described by some researchers as a possible
source of evidence for early symbolic behavior. We examined bone objects from this layer that were identified by Ukrainian
researchers as exhibiting possible Neandertal produced engravings including two anthropomorphic figures. While we have determined
that there is no evidence of symbolic activity at Molodova I, the database we have created, with its systematic recording
of traces left by taphonomic agents on faunal remains, provides a better understanding of the overall site taphonomy. 相似文献

In the 1970s and 1980s, regional analysis was an influential part of archaeological research, providing a discrete set of
geographical tools inspired by a processual epistemological and interpretive perspective. With the advent of new technologies,
new methods, and new paradigms, archaeological research on regional space has undergone significant changes. This article
reviews the state of regional archaeology, beginning with a consideration of its history and a discussion of the fundamental
issues facing regional investigations before focusing on developments over the last several years. On one hand, the diversification
of archaeological theory has created new paradigms for thinking about human relationships with one another and with the physical
environment across regional space; in this regard, historical ecology, landscape archaeology, and evolutionary theory have
been particularly influential in recent years. This has led to a corresponding diversification of the traditional methods
of regional analysis. Most notably, the advent of powerful digital technologies has introduced new tools, especially those
from the geographic information sciences, that build on the quantitative methods of past approaches. The investigation of
regional data is no longer based on a discrete toolkit of simple mathematical and graphical procedures for representing spatial
relationships. Instead, regional archaeology has matured into a diversity of multiscalar spatial and geostatistical techniques
that inform many areas of archaeological inquiry. 相似文献

This article focuses on the presence of humans in Siberia and the Russian Far East at the coldest time of the Late Pleistocene,
called the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and dated to c. 20,000–18,000 rcbp. Reconstruction of the LGM environment of Siberia,
based on the latest models and compilations, provides a background for human existence in this region. Most of Siberia and
the Russian Far East at c. 20,000–18,000 rcbp was covered by tundra and cool steppe, with some forest formations in the river
valleys. Climate was much colder and drier than it is today. Eighteen Upper Paleolithic sites in Siberia are radiocarbon dated
strictly to the LGM, and at least six of them, located in southern parts of western and eastern Siberia and the Russian Far
East, have solid evidence of occupation during that time span. It seems clear that southern Siberia was populated by humans
even at the height of the LGM, and that there was no dramatic decline or complete disappearance of humans in Siberia at that
time. The degree of human adaptation to periglacial landscapes in the mid-Upper Paleolithic of northern Eurasia was quite
high; humans coped with the cold and dry environmental conditions using microblade technology, artificial shelters, tailored
clothes, and megafaunal bones as fuel.

During the nineteenth century, the existence of a southern border in the Córdoba province resulted from a complex situation
where an expanding national state was inserted into a global economic system and into an environment occupied by various Indian
groups. This situation created a mixed society on the borderlands. The military line was defended by forts, with one of them
being the Achiras Fort (1832–1869). The fort was situated at the end of the mountain range of Comechingones. This paper considers
the archaeological investigation of this fort. The most important and consistent part of the archaeological record is the
Command. The Command was formed by two rooms. This work also presents the results of the excavations into the fort and describes
the archaeological remains found. Finally, a general model for archaeology in the South Córdoba Border is presented. 相似文献

This article takes the case of “rouge pot” fragments found in an archaeological context in New Orleans’ French Quarter associated
with the circa 1822 Rising Sun Hotel and investigates the discourses and desires that shape our interpretations of artifacts.
We argue that archaeological, historiographic, and public desires overlap and inform one another in a complex web of relations.
In New Orleans, the particular web into which the archaeology of cosmetic jars and hotel sites can fall is spun by the ways
in which the former French colonial capital is sexualized in both textbooks and folk songs. 相似文献

For over a millennium, shell trumpets have been an important part of Southwestern US ritual practice. We investigate the distribution
of Southwestern shell trumpets, arguing that they are objects that are accorded animacy and can be used to track the history
of different social networks. Using ethnohistoric and ethnographic documentation, at least two traditions of historically
linked ritual practices are identified: one associated with serpent iconography and the other with curing, warfare, and sorcery.
These two traditions represent enduring dispositions that link various regions of the Southwest through the introduction and
adoption of ritual practices associated with migration and the transformation of late prehistoric societies. 相似文献

Yeha, in Tigray, is the most impressive site with evidence for South Arabian influence dating to the first millennium BC in
the northern Horn of Africa (Eritrea and northern Ethiopia). The evidence from this site was used to identify a ‘Pre-Aksumite’
or ‘Ethiopian-Sabean’ Period (mid-first millennium BC) when an early Afro-Arabian state apparently arose in the region. A
‘Pre-Aksumite Culture’, characterised by South Arabian elements, was also suggested as a distinctive archaeological culture
in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. However, recent fieldwork in these countries suggests that a Pre-Aksumite culture actually
did not exist and South Arabian features were restricted to a few sites, which were scattered in a mosaic of different archaeological
cultures in the first millennium BC. This hypothesis is tested through a comparison between the ceramics from Yeha and those
from Matara and other sites of the first millennium BC in Tigray and Eritrea. 相似文献
