Ancient Mining and Smelting Activities in the Wadi Abu Gerida Area,Central Eastern Desert,Egypt: Preliminary Results

Old mining and smelting features in the Abu Gerida area have been studied using field observations, microscopy and SEM–EDS to detect the ores that were exploited in antiquity. There are two groups of shafts in the area. The first group encloses secondary copper minerals and is associated with glassy slags containing copper prills. The other group is associated with hematite that was extracted and transferred to a smelting station to the west of the mining site, where iron slags and charcoal fragments are found. These slags are composed mainly of wüstite, fayalite–kirschsteinite and traces of metallic iron. Pottery fragments from this area were dated to the Ptolemaic Period, which may be the age of iron exploitation. Copper might have been exploited earlier.

The interpretation of the earliest evidence of Lungfish ’Protopterus sp.’ in the Nile valley. El Zakiab Site,central Sudan

El Zakiab site yielded the earliest evidence of lungfish to be recorded from the excavated prehistoric settlements in the region of the Nile valley. The study of the osteological remains of the fish, its behaviour in the absence of water, and its ecological requirements offer evidence concerning the status of the site and its surroundings with reference to human seasonal adaptation.     

Natural Frequency of Single Pier Bridges Considering Soil-Structure Interaction

Because of the crucial role of free vibration frequency of a structure (e.g., a bridge) in design procedure, more realistic estimation of the frequency ends up in safer and more optimized design. As obtaining the free vibration frequencies of a bridge, considering soil-pile group-structure interaction, provide more realistic values, development of an analytical model to obtain such free vibration frequencies is studied in this research work. Most researchers have studied models with a single pile foundation. The purpose of this study is to assess soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects on dynamic performance of pile group supported bridges. A new analytical model is proposed to predict seismic analysis of these bridges. Applying the dynamic equations of motion for the system, SSI effects have been estimated. Based on the suggested analytical model, a new approximate equation is proposed for calculating natural frequency of pile group supported bridges. Equation accuracy has been investigated by comparing the results with those achieved by previous studies. Most periods calculated by the approximate equation are similar to those given for other case studies, indicating that the model could be applicable to other projects. Since the proposed model is very similar to real soil-pile-pier systems, this approximate equation can be used in preliminary seismic design of bridges.     

Tsunamigenic Analysis in and around Makran

The Makran region is only segment east of the Mediterranean and west of Andaman arc in which subduction of oceanic lithosphere is still an ongoing process. We applied statistical models for the possible explanation of earthquakes in and around Makran, and described a method of Fault Plane Solutions to present seismicity picture in the investigated region, and their possible tsunamigenic effects on Gwadar Coast. We also applied the Community Modeling Interface for Tsunami (ComMIT) for the estimation of tsunami hazard along the coast of Gwader due to the Arabian and Eurasian plate boundary earthquakes along the Makran subduction zone.     

Application of an Extended Bouc-Wen Model in Seismic Response Prediction of Unbonded Fiber-Reinforced Isolators

The focus of this article is on seismic-response prediction of Stable Unbonded-Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators (SU-FREIs). The lateral load-displacement of a SU-FREI can be characterized with a gradual softening that is followed by stiffening. An extended Bouc-Wen Model is developed to simulate the response behavior of SU-FREIs under seismic events. To examine the accuracy of model, the response of a base isolated structure to different input earthquakes were simulated and compared with the results of a previous shake table study. Results of this study indicate that the proposed Bouc-Wen Model is robust and reasonably accurate in seismic analysis of SU-FREIs.     

Authorial Voices and the Sense of an Ending in Persian Diaries: Notes on Eʿtemād al-Saltaneh and ʿAlam

This essay examines certain common themes as well as conflicting voices in two extensive sets of Persian diaries, written almost a century apart, by Mohammad-Hasan Khān E?temād al-Saltaneh (1843?96), a long-time courtier and confidant of Nāser al-Din Shah Qajar (r. 1848?86) and Asadollāh ?Alam (1919?78) a close associate and court minister of Mohammad-Reza Shah Pahlavi (r. 1941?79). On the whole these diaries provide significant amounts of information about the inner workings of the court and the overall institutional setup of the Iranian state in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although in writing their diaries these authors did not set out to produce a literary work, and nor did they intend to chronicle a general history, each in his own way captured his respective epoch and, within their limitations of time, scope, and insight, each reflected a broad range of private and social relationships. Also each in his own way echoed older ministerial voices, reminiscent of the voice that often resonates in the “mirror for princes” genre, of part player part intimate observer, and with a certain sense of admonition and resignation, lamenting the loss of an era which they felt was slipping away as they wrote.     

Intergroup Dialogue as a Just Dialogue: Challenging and Preventing Normalization in Campus Dialogues

The tensions from the Israeli occupation of Palestine reach around the globe and heated debates over the struggles of these two peoples are evident on U.S. college campuses. The power imbalance represented in the relationship between Palestinians and Israelis is replicated on college campuses. BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) is a response to this inequality, is a movement to end the occupation, and has raised the issue of normalization. Teaching about this conflict presents particular challenges for faculty who negotiate this highly contested issue in classrooms or campus communities, and intergroup dialogue is an important pedagogy that can be used. It is critical to address normalization in intergroup dialogue. We discuss examples and themes of normalization in intergroup dialogue, and present pedagogical and other strategies to prevent and address normalization in intergroup dialogue and in other similar intergroup contact approaches with Arab or Palestinian and Jewish or Israeli participants.
