A Late Roman ceramic production from Pompeii

The Via Lepanto site is one of the best examples showing how the Vesuvian region was partially reconstructed and earlier re-occupied after Vesuvius's eruption in the year 79 AD. The large amount of ceramic finds illustrates the typology in use in this area during the IV and V century AD. Analyses were focused on table and cooking ware productions. Archaeometric data were obtained using chemical and minero-petrographical methods (OM, XRD, XRF and SEM). Grain size measurements using Image Analyses on thin sections and a geochemical comparison with clayey deposits outcropping in the Campania region permitted the identification of the raw materials used for these pottery productions. XRD and SEM completed the data set, establishing the protocols used for pottery production in the Pompeii area during Late Roman period. The Via Lepanto site was part of an exchange network of markets with a periodic frequency, where locally produced and imported pottery was sold, indicating a flourishing network of exchanges spanning short, medium and long distances.     

El comercio de libros entre Europa y América en la Sevilla del siglo XVI: Impresores,libreros y mercaderes

Este artículo estudia la importancia de la Sevilla del siglo XVI como el centro del comercio de libros entre Europa y la América hispana. Uno de sus objetivos consiste en poner de manifiesto el papel que desempeñaron los grandes libreros, impresores y mercaderes de las principales plazas tipográficas del Viejo continente en la Carrera de Indias; sobre todo los flamencos, italianos y franceses. Estos mercaderes fueron los que abastecían a España y el Nuevo Mundo de libros cultos y profesionales en latín. Mientras que los peninsulares solían ser sus intermediarios en los negocios atlánticos y, a lo sumo, satisfacían de demanda americana de libros en romance, baratos y de alta popularidad. En definitiva, Sevilla y el libro fueron dos protagonistas esenciales de aquella era primera de la globalización económica-cultural.     

Locating the couch: an autobiographical analysis of the multiple spatialities of psychoanalytic therapy

Using an autobiographical methodology, the paper examines the different spatialities involved in psychoanalytic therapy. The paper proposes an understanding of space that is simultaneously physical, relational, emotional, symbolic and transformative. Focusing on the practices and microgeographies involved in psychoanalytic therapy, the aim of the paper is to contribute to the body of literature dealing with psychoanalytic geography by discussing how spatial logics pervade psychoanalytic treatment and to test autobiography as an experience-near, subjectively immersed instrument for investigation.     

Pleistocene foraminifera from Botany Bay,New South Wales

Unconsolidated sediments from a borehole in Botany Bay have been analyzed for their foraminiferal content. Faunas from between 41 and 54 m below sea level are interpreted as Pleistocene in age. The foraminiferal assemblage from 54 m indicates marine conditions of moderately deep water (25–30 m), and a climate warmer than at present. The higher assemblages indicate a more brackish environment

The foraminifera, belonging to 123 species in 67 genera, are tabulated and 24 are discussed and illustrated. Three species, Oolina bifidocostata, Fissurina alatoquadrata and Elphidium botaniensis and one subpecies, Quinqueloculina affinis atrata, are described as new.     

Microsimulation Models and Labor Supply Responses to Welfare Reforms

While in principle including behavioral responses in microsimulation models is always desirable, the intrinsic difficulty of modeling individual behavior and the utilization of the results by a policy audience argue for a cautious and motivated use of behavioral responses. We report simulations of the effect on labor supply of four welfare reforms that affect female heads of households. We find that ignoring behavioral responses understates the disposable income gain (or overstates the losses) incurred by these families. In some cases the differences are trivial, while in others (the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the imposition of time limits) ignoring the labor supply response might provide a distorted view of the effects of the reform.     

First fossil fish (Teleostei,Siluriformes) from the Late Pleistocene of Santa Fe Province,Argentina

The record of fossil fish from the Pleistocene of Argentina is poor. Here we describe the first ichthyofauna from Late Pleistocene riverbank beds in the Salado River of Santa Fe Province, Argentina. The material consists of isolated pectoral and dorsal fin spines, together with skull fragments. Four species-level taxa referable to three families can be identified: Pterodoras granulosus (Doradidae), Pimelodus cf. maculatus and Pimelodus cf. albicans (Pimelodidae) and cf. Hypostomus sp. (Loricariidae). Specimens attributed to Pterodoras granulosus and Pimelodus maculatus represent a minimum age for origin of these taxa. The Salado River assemblage includes the richest record of Pleistocene catfishes yet documented from southern South America.

Measuring Spatial Dispersion: An Experimental Test on the M-Index

Despite representing a very accurate method for assessing spatial distribution, Marcon and Puech's M has been insufficiently exploited so far, most likely because its computation relies on pairing every point of interest (i.e., firms, plants) with every other point within the area under analysis. Such a figure rapidly grows to unmanageable levels when said area is larger than a neighborhood or when every industry is taken into account. Consequently, practical applications of M have been exclusively experimental and circumscribed to very limited areas or to a handful of industries. This seems much regrettable since M provides many advantages compared to conventional measures of spatial distribution and also to alternative distance measures. In this article, we assess the reliability of using small administrative units instead of exact postal addresses for the localization of plants, in order to reduce M's computational burden. Working with a dataset that provides the location, the specific industry and the number of employees for every single plant/establishment in Italy for both manufacturing and services, we can also draw a preliminary but certainly interesting picture of Sardinia's economic geography and its development through the Great Recession toughest years between 2007 and 2012.
