Big Notes from a Little Street: Historical Research at Melbourne’s “Little Lon”

Melbourne’s “Little Lon” has been called the city’s most infamous slum. The community of Little Lon vanished long ago, but its notoriety as a slum persists. This paper challenges the conceptual and methodological underpinnings of such characterizations, and discusses the teamwork between archaeologists and historians whereby the latest phase of excavations at Little Lon in 2002–2004 revealed some of the hidden actualities of this long-misrepresented community.     

Characterisation of Chinese Tang sancai from Gongxian and Yaozhou kilns using ICP-MS trace element and TIMS Sr–Nd isotopic analysis

Tang sancai is one of the most important types of Chinese ceramics. To determine the provenance of Tang sancai is important to study ancient trade and other issues. In this paper we compare ICP-MS trace elements and TIMS Sr–Nd isotopes of visibly similar Tang sancai from two major production centres Gongxian and Yaozhou. The variation in contents/ratios of many of >40 trace elements is small for samples from Gongxian, yet is considerably bigger for that from Yaozhou. However, the variation in ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr and ¹⁴³Nd/¹⁴⁴Nd isotopic ratios is very small for samples from both places. Gongxian and Yaozhou samples have distinctive Sr–Nd isotopic and trace element features despite their similarity in major elements, and these analysis data can be interpreted with geochemistry, indicating that Sr and Nd isotopes have great potential in ceramic provenance studies. The distinct characterisation of these samples provides valuable criteria for identifying provenance of Tang sancai of uncertain origin. Two modern fakes are also analysed, and they can as well be distinguished from antique Tang sancai using above criteria.     

HOUSING RENOVATION BY RECENT MOVERS INTO THE CORE NEIGHBOURHOODS OF SASKATOON

One hundred and eighty-five homeowning households who had moved into core neighbourhoods during 1975–80 were surveyed about their completed and planned interior and exterior home renovations. It was found that expenditures of less than $500 for cosmetic and minor repairs to the interior and exterior predominate. Discriminant analyses of subgroups of 'no' maintainer, normal maintainer, and large-scale renovator households identify financial constraints as the primary hindrance to renovating. Policy implications of the low levels of home renovation in these inner-city neighbourhoods are discussed.
Cent quatre-vingt cinq ménages propriétaries de maison ayant emmnagé dans les quartiers du centre-ville au cours de la période 1975–80 furent interrogs au sujet de leurs rénovations intérieures et extérieures, achevées et en projet. Les résultats montrent que les dépenses de moins de $500 pour réparations mineures et d'ordre esthétique prédominent. L'étude, effectuée a l'aide d'analyses discriminantes, de sous-groupes comprenant respectivement, des ménages qui ne pratiquent aucun entretien, ceux qui pratiquent un entretien normal, et ceux qui effectuent des rénovations majeures, identifie les constraintes financières comme etant l'obstacle le plus important pour la rénovation. Les implications des deux niveaux de rénovation résidentielle pour les politiques de planification urbaine sont discutées.

Psychology,Psychoanalysis and Theories of Nationalism

Abstract. This article reviews some psychological and psychoanalytic social theories to see what they have to offer in terms of an understanding of nations and nationalism. Three approaches are reviewed in turn: discursive psychology, the psychoanalytic work of Theodor Adomo and the Lacanianism of Slavoj Zizek. In critically analysing and drawing on these varied perspectives it is argued that we need to develop a theory of nationalism that focuses on the production of the national ‘subject’. It 0069s further argued that this theorisation enables us to relate nationalism to wider questions of ideology and political identity in modern societies. Drawing out the contours of such a theory the article intimates the sorts of research directions in which this might lead.     

VALUING AMENITIES AND DISAMENITIES OF URBAN SCALE: CAN BIGGER BE BETTER?*

ABSTRACT. Considerable effort has been devoted within the recent literature to the valuation of urban amenities and disamenities, as well as to econometric procedures required for the estimation of their implicit market “prices.” This study questions the equilibrium conditions invoked within this literature to derive estimates of marginal willingness to pay, conditions premised upon “perfect” labor mobility among cities. It is shown that such assumptions need not be invoked if one considers the amenity price-mobility relationship directly. This is accomplished by appending a binary migration model to a first-stage wage equation, a procrdure that provides estimates of willingness to pay that can diverge from market-determined implicit prices. Comparison of such values yields important information on the adequacy of market compensation for disamenities (amenities) throughout metropolitan areas.
