In Auseinandersetzung mit einigen neueren Beiträgen (Andreae, Görler) sucht der Verf. die Schwierigkeiten im Abschnitt über die Laokoongruppe aufzuzeigen und zu lösen. Er behandelt dabei u.a. den logischen Zusammenhang, den Sinn von nec plures pariter nuncupari possunt, die Beziehung von sicut in Laocoonte zum Ganzen und nicht zuletzt die Bedeutung der Apposition opus omnibus ... praeferendum. Das Ergebnis der Analyse bestätigt wichtige Elemente der traditionellen Deutung.     

Regional planning in Brandenburg: Putting traditional approaches to the test

The State of Brandenburg represents one of five states that together make up what was the German Democratic Republic. It is now only 6 years ago when its people demanded and accomplished the abolishion of an entire state that was based on a very extensive system of government planning and control. Since unification in 1990, far‐reaching attempts have been made gradually to transform East German society in all its segments and dimensions with the objective to ‘Westernize’ its structure and functioning. With respect to Brandenburg, this process of adaptation has only recently also extended into the field of regional planning. During the first half of 1994, the establishment of regional planning authorities in all parts of the state was completed. These authorities have been charged with the task of formulating regional development plans as a means of securing and improving the living conditions of their inhabitants.     

The Influence of Salt on Handheld Electrical Moisture Meters: Can They Be Used to Detect Salt Problems in Porous Stone?

Salt contamination in heritage stone affects handheld moisture meter measurements on-site. This poses a problem when the readings indicate erroneously higher levels of moisture than actually present. For decision making with regards to moisture prevention treatment it is therefore crucial to distinguish between actual dampness and the hygroscopic action of salts. This study investigated the effect on moisture meter readings of both increased conductivity of pore water and the increased water retention caused by the presence of sodium chloride (NaCl) in artificially contaminated Portland limestone samples. The influence of NaCl contamination on selected handheld moisture meters was quantified. As a result, this article proposes that under certain circumstances moisture meters could be used to diagnose, reliably, both moisture and salt problems in heritage stone.     

The Borrow Pit Landscape

During the construction of the interstate highway system, large amounts of fill were required to build up roadbeds and ramps. This fill was obtained from sites adjacent to the highway, creating large holes or borrow pits. While attempts were made to fill and grade some of these pits, many remained and eventually filled with water. Over the years, the borrow pit has been sought out for development and in the process a new roadside settlement feature has been created.     

Pigments from the Zuiddorp (Zuytdorp) ship sculpture: red,white and blue?

SUMMARY: The Dutch East India Company ship Zuiddorp (also known as Zuytdorp) met its demise in 1712 at the base of steep cliffs along the Western Australian coast. Material from the shipwreck includes an extraordinary example of a caryatid herm from the ship’s stern counter. A recent study of this sculpture and the pigments found on its surface demonstrates Zuiddorp’s archaic stern construction and adornment, which is more of a late 17th-century, than an early 18th-century, Dutch Indiaman. This paper discusses the results of this study and emphasizes how the smallest pieces of evidence can broaden our understanding of contemporaneous regional Dutch East India Company shipbuilding practices.
