Landscape Mapping (Its Significance,Its Present State and Its Tasks)

The article surveys the post-war economic development of Canada from the point of view of the nation's rapid expansion as a supplier of raw materials and semi-finished goods on the world market. The regional section analyzes the development of four major Canadian regions: the Atlantic, Central, Prairie and Far West regions, as well as the Canadian North. In all regions the most rapid rates of growth are found to have been recorded by raw-material-producing industries oriented toward the export market.

Dunster and Its Lords

As part of a wider study of the archaeological evidence for slavery in the ancient world, this paper deals with the typology, mechanism, chronology, and distribution of iron age and Roman slave-shackles. These are subdivided into neck-shackles, manacles (for hands), and fetters (for feet). The distribution of iron age examples defines a trading pattern between the Celtic and Roman worlds. The preponderance of Roman types a) on the limes and b) in Gaul and Britain suggests the role of the military in slave-taking on the one hand, and the use of slaves in agriculture on the other. Separate sections deal briefly with the Pompeian material, the physiological evidence for shackles (including Greece), and animal hobbles of iron age and recent date. A catalogue of the material is appended.

Mental Health Policy Inquiry, Its Importance, and Its Rewards

This article suggests some characteristics of the field of mental health that might explain why political scientists and public policy analysts have evidenced little interest in the study of mental health policy. Following a brief overview of United States mental health policy, the author makes the case for the importance of menial health policy inquiry on grounds of both pragmatic and theoretical significance.

认识论哲学观是西方传统哲学的主流哲学观。认识论哲学观主张,哲学是人类以理性对全部世界的总体图景、基本性质、内在本质和运动规律进行认识,获取系统化的理性知识并做出科学说明的活动,是系统性的理性知识和真理的体系。本文在论述认识论哲学观的基础上,指出认识论哲学观隐藏着深沉的生存论关切,现代生存论哲学观是对传统认识论哲学观的超越。     

Renaissance Humanism and Its Discontents

Abstract

The essay explores humanism’s modernity by inquiring into the way the fifteenth-century humanist cultural program posited moral values and, at the same time, contributed to a sense of moral confusion. While Niccolò Niccoli, Pier Paolo Vergerio, and Leonardo Bruni associated ethical enlightenment with learning and even social acclaim, Leon Battista Alberti criticized these assumptions not only for their susceptibility to political manipulation but also for their failure to cultivate the attributes they promised: virtue, and by extension happiness and tranquillity. The tensions in humanist culture between conformity and dissent, rational certainty and sense of mutability, generated the creative energy that we, as moderns, have come to attribute to this culture.

源自西方的法律家长主义理论主张政府在某些领域为了公民自身的利益可以不顾其意志而限制其自由或自治。该理论与中国当前注重以人为本的新民本理念相适应,且与中国法律文化传统、法律规范与社会现实微有契合之处,但却不能与其相提并论。本文通过对西方法律家长主义的论述,试图找到法律家长主义在中国的适用空间。     

The Lawn-Chemical Economy and Its Discontents

The daily geographies of consumption represent some of the most ecologically important and economically complex frontiers for critical research. Among these, the turfgrass lawn is perhaps the most overlooked, owing to its very ordinariness. Despite the serious risks posed to human health and ecosystem viability by high-input lawn systems, little critical scholarship has engaged the lawn, especially as a structured economic phenomenon. This paper explores the forces and political economic conditions under which the lawn is produced, promulgated, and resisted in North America. In the process, we draw attention to the deeply structured economic impetus behind the direct sale of potentially toxic chemicals to urban dwellers. Based on survey research and a review of the industry, we argue (1) that chemical demand is driven by urban growth and classed aesthetics, (2) that direct and aggressive sales of chemicals to consumers are spurred by crises in the chemical-formulator industry, (3) that the search for consumer-lawn markets is driven by declining margins in the worldwide chemical trade, and (4) that counterinstitutional struggles against high-input lawns represent a salvo against otherwise abstract and daunting cultural-economic hegemony.

孟子的实践哲学是一个完整而精致的体系。在确立人为实践主体的前提下,设定了以仁政王天下的宏伟实践目标,规划了以道德实践为核心的内容,通过"求放心"、"思"、养心、养气等主体的思维实践,张扬善端,实现仁政王天下的实践目的。孟子在他的实践哲学构建的过程中,凝练出高扬主体价值、主体与客体高度统一、人性与实践有机结合等鲜明的特征。     

中国的近代化与国情

中国近代化面临的特殊国情主要有二：一是近代化因素的积累严重不足;二是封建专制政治制度对近代资本主义因素的顽固排拒。任何致力于近代化事业的有识之士都必须正确认识这种特殊国情,对清政府和专制政治心存幻想注定不切实际,对近代化因素的积累水平估计过高也注定要走弯路。但在自鸦片战争至五四运动前的近百年时间里,有识之士们在对国情的认识上恰恰存在以上两种误区。正是这种认识上的误区,导致了有识之士们在近代化道路的选择和近代化具体操作过程中的种种错误决策,并因而延缓了中国近代化的进程。
