Belarus' Ten Years After Chernobyl'

A recognized world authority on the history and consequences of the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl' nuclear power plant examines the present impact of the accident on the economy and society of Belarus'. An initial section focuses on the geography of radioactive contamination within the republic, followed by sections on evacuation procedures and official programs of assistance, living conditions within the contaminated zone, and the role played by international charitable institutions vis-á-vis the government in providing long-term assistance to those seriously affected by the accident. Political considerations underlying the involvement of government and grassroots organizations in Chernobyl' assistance programs are explored. 1 table, 1 figure, 32 references.     

The Americans With Disabilities Act and Medical Providers: Ten Years After Passage of the Act

This article discusses the impact of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) on health care providers in the last decade. Even though some ADA training has been provided for health care providers, more education will help to improve access to their offices, improve health care practices for their patients with disabilities, and be an incentive for the providers to help raise the consciousness of the rest of the community about the ADA.

<正>2005年2005年6月9—11日"全球重要农业文化遗产保护项目‘稻鱼共生系统’启动研讨会"在浙江杭州和青田召开,同时举行了"全球重要农业文化遗产——浙江青田稻鱼共生系统"授牌仪式,FAO驻华代表Mona先生、朱秀岩总经济师、茅临生副省长、李文华院士、关君蔚院士等出席。2006年2006年6月10日中国科学院地理科学与资源研究所成立"自然与文化遗产研究中心",李文华院士任中心主任。     

Face-Work: Making Hair Matter in Sixteenth-Century Central Europe

Bringing gender history, the history of the body and art history into a conversation with material culture studies, this article argues that the sudden fashionability of beards in Renaissance Europe has been intricately linked with a culture of material and visual experimentation. I propose shifting perspectives from a focus on the symbolism of beards towards examining how early modern ways of material engagement with the matter of hair crafted a visual attention to facial hair that made up the sociocultural significance of beards. Focusing on how people made hair matter, I suggest working with the concept of face-work. In particular, this article maps how the Reformation upheavals and the rise of new visual practices dynamised Renaissance protagonists’ creative engagement with facial hair as a means for staging the self.     

Middle pleistocene adaptations in Central Europe

The biological evolution documented in the fossil and archaeological record of Central Europe between about 700,000 and 100,000 years ago reflects the transition fromHomo erectus to the earliestHomo sapiens. These populations created different types of industries, ranging from assemblages of small artifacts and industries with simple pebble tools to standardized units such as the Evolved Acheulean and the Early Mousterian. The industries of the Last Interglacial (Taubachian) show some regression in technological standardization and a reappearance of small artifacts. Other aspects of cultural adaptation (settlements, dwellings, hunting activity, symbolic and aesthetic expressions) are also summarized. It is suggested that the impact of climate and climatic changes on human settlement and behavior was greater in Central Europe (where two glaciations advanced from both north and south) than in the Mediterranean and Western Europe. The general trend of cultural veolution was toward greater technological and social complexity, but its course was not unilinear.     

清朝统治集团的最后十年

从1901年《辛丑条约》签订到1911年辛亥革命爆发是清朝统治的最后十年。这十年中,民族危机和社会危机日益加深,清朝统治集团为了维护其根本利益,采取了废科举、兴学堂、发展交通、改进司法制度等改革措施;还宣布预备立宪,各省相继设立了谘议局;1908年又颁布《钦定宪法大纲》。然而,清政府打着开办新政的旗号,增捐加税,横征暴敛,对民众进行无休止的掠夺,将专注于工商业的国内立宪派也推到了自己的对立面。辛亥革命前夕,清朝统治集团对外一味屈从,其政治腐败已到无可救药的地步,最终为民众所共弃,它的覆灭是必然的,谁也挽救不了。那种一厢情愿地认为,如果让清朝政府继续存在下去,稳步地有秩序地进行改革,中国的现代化将会来得更快些的说法,终究是“纸上文章”,“不当不实”。

青田十年 站在农业文化遗产的新起点

How Wealth Happened in Neolithic Central Europe

This paper advances the proposition that three key technological and logistical systems matured during the fourth and third millennia BC in Late Neolithic/Copper Age Europe: transportation infrastructure, durable goods made of metals, and capital investment in oxen used for traction. As risk rather than uncertainty became the dominant condition under which decisions were made, the convergence of these factors permitted individuals and households to accumulate genuine wealth.
