A VISIT TO YAKUTIA

This paper discusses perceived benefits and disadvantages of direct inflation targeting for economies in transition in Central Europe. It examines the experience of net inflation targeting in the Czech Republic and of CPI forecast targeting regimes in Poland, providing specific suggestions for enhancing transparency of monetary policy. Inflation targeting is compared with exchange-rate pegging and is viewed as a superior solution for facilitating the monetary convergence of central European EU candidates to the inflation level prevailing in the eurozone. Other benefits of inflation targeting for central banks in transition economies are described as well. 旅游体验前后日常环境行为对具体地点环境行为的影响——以大学生黄山旅游体验为例

明确日常生活中与旅游情境下环境责任行为之间的关系对于推进个体环境责任行为具有重要意义。将黄山旅游体验操作化为体验经历，以同一批次黄山旅游者游前、游后的环境责任行为调查数据为基础，运用Smart PLS软件，基于最小二乘法，对游前和游后的日常环境责任行为对具体地点环境责任行为之间的影响关系进行检验。研究结果表明：①游前和游后数据均显示，日常环境责任行为不同维度均部分影响具体地点环境责任行为，但影响有限。②行为之间相似性越高，越容易产生影响。③旅游体验后的日常环境责任行为对具体地点环境责任行为的影响略大于游前两者之间的影响，旅游体验可能会增强行为之间的正向影响。     

Animal Electricity at the End of the Eighteenth Century: The Many Facets of a Great Scientific Controversy

In the 1790s, Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta were the main protagonists of a lively debate on the role of electricity in animal organisms. Significant developments originated from this debate, leading to the foundation of two new disciplines, electrodynamics and electrophysiology, that were to play a crucial role in the scientific and technological progress of the last two centuries. The Galvani-Volta controversy has been repeatedly reconstructed, sometimes in an attempt to identify the merits and the errors of one or the other of the two protagonists, sometimes with the aim of demonstrating that the theories elaborated by the two Italian scholars were irreconcilable, reflecting completely different ways of looking at phenomena and conceiving of scientific research. In this article a different interpretation is offered, based on a discussion of the scientific issues that were central to Galvani's and Volta's research, and with reference to the context of science and society of the eighteenth century.     

Consequences of Styles of Thinking: On the Relative and the Absolute in Archaeology at the End of the Twentieth Century

The article discusses relativism and absolutism in archaeology on the threshold of a new millennium. The point of departure is Nationalism, Po-­litics, and the Practice of Archaeology and a 'consensus document' from the Lampeter Archaeological Workshop advocating a relativist attitude in archaeology. The author considers that relativism is closely related to indifference and is far from as positive as it is represented. On the basis of Feyerabend's concept of Denkstil (style of thinking) and the fondness of 'post-processual' archaeologists for manifestos, the article considers archaeology under Maoism in China, and whether Ian Hodder's appeal for an archaeology for all sheds light on views of professionalism and the training of archaeologists.     

Peace Conferences and the Century Of Total War: The 1899 Hague Conference and What Came After

The Hague Peace Conference of 1899 was unprecedented and momentous. Pressed by public concern about the arms race and its costs, the governments of all great and most lesser powers, suppressing their doubts about the possibility of achieving anything, convened in May 1899 to discuss the Tsar's draft proposals for general measures of disarmament and pacification. Although there was too much mutual suspicion for any progress with disarmament, the Conference opened up a new era in international relations: its multilateral treaty to encourage arbitration and its establishment of a permanent court to facilitate this may be seen as the germ of the International Court of Justice; and within a batch of measures designed to modernize the laws of war, the Hague Regulations Respecting the Laws and Customs of War on Land, recapitulated at the second such conference in 1907, became the basis of our century's laws of war. Apart from those achievements, given the grand aims of the Conference and the public interest it generated, it can be seen as a prototype of all League of Nations and United Nations gatherings ever since.     

PHYSICOCHEMICAL COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSIS OF CERAMICS: A CASE STUDY IN KENTING,TAIWAN*

The composition of ceramics does not just reflect the component of some specific, unprocessed, geological, raw material source, but also certain forms of human behaviour involved in its manufacture. The purpose of this research project is to apply the acid‐extraction chemical method, complemented by a thin‐section petrographic study, to the compositional analyses of certain local ceramic collections (mainly from several sites in the southern Taiwan area). The results present the raw materials that the ceramic manufacturers of the two cultural traditions (O‐laun‐pi Phase II and Phase III–IV), which overlapped temporally, used. These materials came from the same sources, but the ceramics were manufactured in different ways. Particularly, the people of O‐laun‐pi Phase III–IV also procured certain materials from either local sources or from somewhere in eastern Taiwan to make their pots. The results also indicate that there might have been a variation in terms of their manufacture among sites of the same cultural tradition.
