AbstractUrban agglomeration economies make cities central to theories of modern economic growth. There is historical evidence for the presence of Smithian growth and agglomeration effects in English towns c.1450-1670, but seminal assessments deny the presence of agglomeration effects and productivity gains to Early Modern English towns. This study evaluates the presence of increasing returns to scale (IRS) in aggregate urban economic outputs—the empirical signature of feedbacks between Smithian growth and agglomeration effects—among the towns of 16th century England. To do so, we test a model from settlement scaling theory against the 1524/5 Lay Subsidy returns. Analysis of these data indicates that Tudor towns exhibited IRS—a finding that is robust to alternative interpretations of the data. IRS holds even for the smallest towns in our sample, suggesting the absence of town size thresholds for the emergence of agglomeration effects. Spatial patterning of scaling residuals further suggests regional demand-side interactions with Smithian-agglomeration feedbacks. These findings suggest the presence of agglomeration effects and Smithian growth in pre-industrial English towns. This begs us to reconsider the economic performance of Early Modern English towns, and suggests that the qualitative economic dynamics of contemporary cities may be applicable to premodern settlements in general. 相似文献

Paying for water: water pricing and equity in England and Wales 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Karen Bakker 《Transactions (Institute of British Geographers : 1965)》2001,26(2):143-164
Over the past three decades, the business of water supply in England and Wales has been gradually transforming from the supply of a service to citizens, to the sale of a commodity to customers. The paper provides a genealogy of concepts of efficiency and equity in water regulation over the past thirty years, prior to evaluating the implications for water consumers of one aspect of this process – the shift away from policies prioritizing inter- and intra-regional equalization (implying a principle of social equity) towards policies prioritizing economic efficiency (implying a principle of economic equity) in water charging. In closing, alternatives to the current arrangements for domestic consumers are proposed. 相似文献

This article analyzes a seventeenth-century adultery case from southern Massachusetts to examine the effects of Puritan colonization
on Native American women. As a feminist analysis the article focuses on gendered access to power and considers Puritan strategies
for transforming Native American gendered relations. This reading highlights Puritan use of physical punishment and public
humiliation to shape gendered behavior. It exposes Puritan efforts to transform Native American men into Puritan patriarchs
and to transform Native American women into submissive consorts. It concludes with a series of characteristics that will define
archaeological sites that date to the period immediately after New England’s colonization. Arguably, Sarah and the Puritans
contributes to history more than it contributes to archaeology because the primary evidence is documentary, rather than archaeological.
Nonetheless, this analysis informs archaeological interpretation by revealing the consequences of cultural change on the archaeological
record. By demonstrating colonization’s transformative power on southern New England Native American culture, Sarah and the
Puritans identifies the context in which many historical period Native American sites were created. Ultimately, this affords
an opportunity to gender New England colonization and to examine the archaeological record of that process. 相似文献

During the mid‐1700s, an uneducated layman named George Weekes began preaching to Native Americans in the town of Harwich, Massachusetts. Weekes’ missionary activity triggered a passionate response from Nathaniel Stone, the local minister, and inaugurated a debate regarding ministerial qualifications within the community. Scholars who study English missionary activity in colonial New England tend to focus upon the careers of trained clergy, such as John Eliot or Josiah Cotton. Other individuals, who possessed questionable moral character and little education, also preached to New England Indians, however. In this instance, the career of George Weekes, a rogue missionary, reveals that contact with Native Americans could shape ecclesiastical life in colonial Massachusetts. It also suggests that Native Americans encountered popular, as well as elite, English religious culture when they interacted with English missionaries in early New England. 相似文献

The reformed planning system introduced in England in 2004 weakens the position of counties and unitary authorities. Regional bodies and central government have a larger say on the future shape of localities under these arrangements. In particular sub-regional strategies have a much bigger role within the new Regional Spatial Strategies. This paper examines the prospects for the influence of this new tier of planning, based on government guidance about sub-regional planning and on the evidence on emerging practice, particularly in the southern regions of England. The balance of influence of different actors is changing, both between government tiers and in wider governance relations. The prospects for integrated action in spatial terms are changing, as are the relationships to implementation. 相似文献
