A variety of dynamical processes are important in coupling motions within the middle atmosphere and lower ionosphere. These processes can generally be classified as either advective, wave-like or diffusive. Within the middle atmosphere, wave-like processes, and especially gravity waves, are of crucial importance. Turbulent diffusion and advection probably play lesser, but not insignificant, roles. However, whether these same concepts apply to coupling for regions outside the middle atmosphere—and especially between the upper middle atmosphere and the lower ionosphere—is not clear. In this paper the current knowledge about coupling processes between these important regions is reviewed. We discuss coupling processes in the middle atmosphere with the objective of examining how well these concepts may be extended to the topic of middle atmosphere to ionosphere coupling. Different approaches to understanding, and the different experimental procedures used by workers studying the middle atmosphere and ionosphere, also make comparisons difficult. The importance of the measurement of common parameters is highlighted, and the need for coordinated campaigns to examine the interactions between the regions is emphasized.  相似文献

Calculations using a numerical model of the convection dominated high latitude ionosphere are compared with observations made by EISCAT as part of the UK-POLAR Special Programme. The data used were for 24–25 October 1984, which was characterized by an unusually steady IMF, with Bz < 0 and By > 0; in the calculations it was assumed that a steady IMF implies steady convection conditions. Using the electric field models of Heppner and Maynard (1983) appropriate to By > 0 and precipitation data taken from Spiroet al. (1982), we calculated the velocities and electron densities appropriate to the EISCAT observations. Many of the general features of the velocity data were reproduced by the model. In particular, the phasing of the change from eastward to westward flow in the vicinity of the Harang discontinuity, flows near the dayside throat and a region of slow flow at higher latitudes near dusk were well reproduced. In the afternoon sector modelled velocity values were significantly less than those observed. Electron density calculations showed good agreement with EISCAT observations near the F-peak, but compared poorly with observations near 211 km. In both cases, the greatest disagreement occurred in the early part of the observations, where the convection pattern was poorly known and showed some evidence of long term temporal change. Possible causes for the disagreement between observations and calculations are discussed and shown to raise interesting and, as yet, unresolved questions concerning the interpretation of the data. For the data set used, the late afternoon dip in electron density observed near the F-peak and interpreted as the signature of the mid-latitude trough is well reproduced by the calculations. Calculations indicate that it does not arise from long residence times of plasma on the nightside, but is the signature of a gap between two major ionization sources, viz. photoionization and particle precipitation.  相似文献

The physical mechanism of a cyclotron resonance interaction between trapped energetic electrons and whistler-mode waves in the magnetosphere is discussed. Not only do the electrons have their pitch angles reduced in this interaction, so that they may be precipitated into the upper atmosphere, but also the waves can be amplified. Such a flux of precipitating electrons can, either by direct ionisation or via bremsstrahlung radiation, cause a pimple to be produced on the bottom of the ionosphere. That can significantly modify the amplitude and/or phase of very low frequency radio signals propagating in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide. Various experimental observations that demonstrate the reality of such effects are reviewed. The conditions necessary for a positive feedback situation are discussed, and some evidence for its existence assessed.  相似文献

The morphology of the MAP/WINE winter is examined, principally from ground-based and satellite observations. Winter anomaly is evident, occurring in bursts with a west to east shift in time. Auroral activity, particularly with reference to the times of major rocket salvoes, is generally low, with Andøya to the south of the auroral boundary in most cases. Minor stratospheric warmings, of which 4 occurred, are found to correlate with minima in radio wave absorption. Salvo R1 was launched during one of the minor warmings.Using data from a broad sector of Europe, coupling between the lower thermosphere and mesosphere is seen over large areas. Westerly winds are associated with high absorption (winter anomaly) and reversal to easterly winds with stratospheric warmings and low absorption. It is found possible to select cases, from amongst the MT series of rocket launchings, corresponding to quiet conditions, stratospheric warming, winter anomaly and particle precipitation in the general absence of other effects. Examining D- and lower E-region ionisation profiles for these caes it is found that, compared with a quiet night, the stratwarm night shows the lower E-region to have reduced ionisation. The ionisation ledge is of similar shape in all cases, but occurs over different height ranges. The observed effects all point to transport being a major factor and the need to measure vertical transport over the range of geophysical conditions examined is highlighted.  相似文献

Geomagnetic storm effects at heights of about 0–100 km are briefly (not comprehensively) reviewed, with emphasis being paid to middle latitudes, particularly to Europe. Effects of galactic cosmic rays, solar particle events, relativistic and highly relativistic electrons, and IMF sector boundary crossings are briefly mentioned as well. Geomagnetic storms disturb the lower ionosphere heavily at high latitudes and very significantly also at middle latitudes. The effect is almost simultaneous at high latitudes, while an after-effect dominates at middle latitudes. The lower thermosphere is disturbed significantly. In the mesosphere and stratosphere, the effects become weaker and eventually non-detectable. There is an effect in total ozone but only under special conditions. Surprisingly enough, correlations with geomagnetic storms seem to reappear in the troposphere, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Atmospheric electricity is affected by geomagnetic storms, as well. We essentially understand the effects of geomagnetic storms in the lower ionosphere, but there is a lack of mechanisms to explain correlations found deeper in the atmosphere, particularly in the troposphere. There seem to be two different groups of effects with possibly different mechanisms—those observed in the lower ionosphere, lower thermosphere and mesosphere, and those observed in the troposphere.  相似文献

This paper is a brief review of ionospheric irregularities in the equatorial topside ionosphere. Results from topside sounders, direct measurement satellites, and the Jicamarca incoherent scatter radar are discussed. Scintillation observations and theories of irregularities are not discussed in detail as these are the subject of other review papers. Many of the phenomena detected in the topside ionosphere are related to bottomside irregularities, commonly known as spread-F. These include aspect-sensitive scattering observed on topside sounders, significant concentrations of Fe+, electrostatic turbulence and the topside irregularities detected by the Jicamarca radar. Satellite measurements show that the irregularities in electron concentration have amplitudes which increase almost linearly with wave-length over the range 70m to 3km. Duct irregularities detected by the topside sounders and some wavelike irregularity structures detected occasionally by direct measurement satellites may be separate from the general spread-F phenomenon although this has not definitely been established.  相似文献

Ionospheric absorption measurements (Al method) made in the course of eight voyages by Soviet and other research vessels indicate that the global distribution of absorption shows a distinctive regional structure. Areas of abnormally high absorption in the neighbourhood of the equator have been located in the Pacific near the west coast of South America and in the Indian Ocean. The west Mediterranean area also shows abnormally high absorption. In some cases these areas of high absorption appear to coincide with areas of low nocturnal F-region electron density.  相似文献

There are two basic types of IMF sector boundary crossing effect. One is observed in the IMF magnitude, geomagnetic activity, the nighttime lower ionosphere in high mid-latitudes and in an inverse form in cosmic rays and is reasonably well explained. The other is observed in the noon lower ionosphere in high mid-latitudes and in the troposphere; its interpretation remains open.  相似文献

The total rate of recombination in the night-time ionosphere above Malvern (at L = 2.6) was estimated using a model atmosphere, and the results were compared with the observed rate of change of total electron content to determine the net influx of plasma. Horizontal transport under the influence of electric fields was an important factor on a time-scale of an hour or less but when averaged throughout the night made little contribution. The main influx of plasma was a downward diffusion from the protonosphere, especially before midnight. The average downward flux increased steadily as the protonosphere filled after a magnetic storm, with a saturation time of at least 8 days.  相似文献

Special types of VLF signals, which follow whistlers and spherics and have an anomalous dispersion near the lower hybrid resonance (LHR) frequency, have been observed on the low-altitude Intercosmos satellites. These signals have been named LHR whistlers and LHR spherics, respectively. A mechanism is suggested for the formation of their spectra, based on the peculiarities of quasi-resonance wave propagation at frequencies near the LHR frequencies. It is shown that the large dispersion observed may be accounted for by a significant increase in the propagation time of the wave as its frequency approaches the maximum in the LHR frequency profile.  相似文献

Data from a chain of seven ionosondes in the range of 56–38 N and 1–38° E geographic coordinates were analysed to illustrate the global and regional behaviour of the mid-latitude F-region for some selected geomagnetic storms that occurred during the solar cycle 21. It was found that there are different spatial scales in the response of the mid-latitude ionosphere to the disturbance in the magnetosphere-ionosphere thermosphere system. The physical mechanisms and processes are discussed in relation to the relevance of various theories in the understanding of the dynamics of ionospheric storms.  相似文献

Nonlinearity of the phase time delay vs frequency of the ionospheric channel results in frequency dispersion. This distorts wideband signals and leads to amplitude reduction and ‘elongation’ of narrow pulses. Its effect on frequency modulated continuous wave signals (FMCW or chirp) is to broaden the width of the compressed pulse and to produce a chirp signal at the output of the detector instead of the ideal sine function. Several workers have studied this distortion and derived expressions which related the width of the compressed pulse to the first order derivative of the group time delay vs frequency. These expressions are limited to the case when the bandwidth of the channel is greater than the bandwidth of the transmitted chirp signal. In this paper a generalized expression for the time-bandwidth product of the chirp signal at the output of the detector is derived. Numerical calculations for the width of the compressed pulse vs its time-bandwidth product for various window functions are presented. The results are then applied to experimental data obtained over a short skywave radio link.  相似文献

Long-term variations of electron concentration in the mid-latitude ionosphere, independent of heliogeophysical conditions and the meteorological characteristics of the atmosphere, have been determined. It is suggested that a long-term decrease of atomic and molecular oxygen concentrations in the mid-latitude thermosphere is the most possible reason for the trends found in ionospheric parameters.  相似文献

Horizontal transport under the influence of electric fields was measured but at the latitude of St. Santin this was always small and averaged over the night as a whole the contribution was negligible. Downward diffusion provided the main source of plasma and the flux predicted was compared with the flux measured at 450 km. The comparison was good provided the model atmosphere was modified to use exospheric temperatures based on actual measurements by the incoherent scatter radar. A comparison with the results obtained at Malvern (Paper I) confirmed that the saturation time for the protonosphere at L = 1.8 is far less than at L = 2.6 and that the downward flux from the saturated protonosphere was also less.  相似文献

The results of studies of the fine structure and dynamic processes in the high-latitude ionosphere in the cleft and cusp region by the data of complex radiophysical observations on high-latitudinal paths are presented. They are based on experimental material obtained on board the research vessel ‘Professor Vize’ during July-September 1990 when the vessel was at the Greenwich meridian and the latitudes 75–78°N. The distinctive feature of the radiophysical observations on the vessel was the simultaneous observations by the Doppler method at two fixed frequencies in the decameter range and by the method of oblique sounding of the ionosphere at a frequency sweeping the range from 3.5 to 27.5 MHz. From the observations, the typical feature of the cleft and the cusp has been found to be the presence of wave processes of various periods from 30–40 s to 3–8 min. It is suggested that the emergence of typical negative tracks on the dynamic spectra of HF signals is related to the ionospheric manifestations of flux transfer events.  相似文献

Enlightenment optimism over mankind's progress was often voiced in terms of botanical growth by key figures such as John Millar; the mind's cultivation marked the beginning of this process. For agriculturists such as Arthur Young cultivation meant an advancement towards virtue and civilization; the cultivation of the mind can similarly be seen as an enlightenment concept which extols the human potential for improvable reason. In the course of this essay I aim to explore the relationship between ‘culture’ and ‘cultivation’ through botanical metaphor. By using the recurring motif of the mind's cultivation as a site from which to explore enlightenment views on female understanding, I investigate how far concerns with human progress extended to the female mind.

I examine the language of botany and cultivation in texts by authors such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Anna Laetitia Barbauld alongside that of Rousseau and Millar. Wollstonecraft's appropriation and subsequent inversion of the conventional cultivation metaphor, for example, demonstrates her desire to draw attention to society's neglect of women's educational potential by substituting images of enlightened growth with those of luxuriant decay. By pushing this analogy further she indicates how society has cultivated women rearing them like exotic flowering plants or ‘luxuriants’ where ‘strength of body and mind are sacrificed to libertine notions of beauty’. I discuss the antipastoral rationalism which enables her to unmask the false sentiment behind this traditional metaphoric association between women and flowers arguing that such familiar tropes are the language of male desire and are indicative of women's problematic relationship to culture.  相似文献

Radio waves in a stratified plasma can sometimes penetrate through a region where, according to a simple ray theory, they would be evanescent. They emerge on the far side in a different magnetoionic mode. This occurs when the incident wave normal is within a small cone of angles, called a radio window. The best known example is the Ellis window, used to explain the Z-trace in ionosonde records. Other phenomena where windows may be important have recently been studied. Simple approximate formulae are given for the transmission coefficient of a window and for its angular widths. These show the dependence on frequency, electron concentration gradient and direction of the ambient magnetic field. Comparison with more accurate calculations shows that these formulae are likely to be reliable in practical applications. The tracing of rays near a window is discussed, and the properties of a second kind of window are described.  相似文献
