林剑鸣教授学术小传

著名学者林剑鸣教授于秦汉史、法律史的教学、研究和出版,其贡献在学术界是非常突出和多方面的,先生长期以来对本刊的扶持和关心亦令人难忘。今年是林剑鸣教授逝世五周年,特刊发新近出版的《纪念林剑鸣教授史学论文集》中《林剑鸣教授学术传略》一文,以资纪念。

Classical Biography: An Ancient Literary Art

The contradictory and distorted portrayal of certain female attributes in Pablo Neruda's Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada is an attempt to understand and unveil, from an adolescent's point of view, the mystery of the "beloved." The lack of knowledge about the female explains the ambivalence and insecurity in the representation of the woman, which resolves itself through a strategy of metamorphosis and textual dissection. Nevertheless, to discover and possess these female attributes is an illusion, a mirage created by masculine desire that only succeeds in approaching the beloved through a series of metamorphoses and fragmentation that actually obscures her further. But the effort is not in vain. The desire to understand (and love) makes possible the pursuit of the female who always is the same, although somehow different: the unknown stranger.     

An Academic Perspective on Grey Literature

This article presents an academic’s perspective on grey literature, providing the viewpoint from someone who has experience publishing in both academic and grey literature venues. I explore the strengths and weaknesses of grey literature and argue that more rigorous quality control, increased access to this literature, and more scholarly cooperation are necessary in order for grey literature to become accepted as a legitimate published form.

Abstract

The Banquet Speech to the North American Paul Tillich Society was given in Philadelphia, PA on November 18, 2005. It emphasized their personal friendship even if neither would have claimed the other as best friend, and detailed their practical partnership as an alliance. They cooperated together in: anti-Nazi and World War II efforts, their pro-Zionist stance regarding Israel, disagreement with the government over plans to use nuclear weapons, progressive politics and anti-right-wing political activities, and socialism, although Tillich continued a socialist hope after Niebuhr had moved away from socialist commitments.     

The Biography of a Settlement: An Analysis of Middle Iron Age Deposits and Houses at Howe,Orkney

The extensively excavated enclosed broch village at Howe, near Stromness on Mainland, Orkney, was one of the most important excavations of the latter half of the twentieth century in Scotland. The near-complete excavation of such an extensive and well-preserved settlement, with a large material assemblage, allows a detailed analysis of depositional practices. Little attempt was made in the published report to explore the spatial and contextual distributions of finds, and this article reconsiders the evidence, providing an analysis of settlement deposits during the main phase of occupation in the Middle Iron Age. The study aims to develop a broader understanding of the nature of settlement space on this highly structured and complex settlement. The analysis has demonstrated that a number of patterns are visible in the deposition of materials, and the temporality of the deposits suggest that the majority of depositional events were connected with major structural changes on the site. Transitional moments in the lifecycle of the settlement were thus marked in specific ways by the occupants. The analysis highlights the entangled nature of people, objects and constructed spaces in the Iron Age.     

Camillo Golgi's Scientific Biography

Born in Corteno, a tiny village in the province of Brescia, Camillo Golgi studied at the University of Pavia where he graduated in medicine in 1865 under the guidance of the psychiatrist Cesare Lombroso who sparked his vocation to study the brain. Golgi then began to learn histological techniques under the direction of the pathologist Giulio Bizzozero. In 1872 he moved to Abbiategrasso as chief of a hospital for chronic diseases. In a rudimentary laboratory he developed the silver-bichromate staining technique, the ‘black reaction’, which was a breakthrough for nervous tissue structure research. While in Abbiategrasso Golgi demonstrated the branching of the axons, and observed striatal and cortical lesions in a case of chorea. He returned to Pavia as Professor of Histology and General Pathology, and made a series of important discoveries that still bear his name: the Golgi tendon organ, the Golgi-Mazzoni corpuscles, another Golgi method to stain nerve cells based on the use of potassium dichromate and mercuric chloride, the canaliculi of the parietal cells of the gastric glands (Müller-Golgi tubules), the Golgi-Rezzonico myelin's annular apparatus (or Golgi-Rezzonico horny funnels), the cycle of malarian parasites (Golgi cycle), the relationship between recurrent malarian fever bouts and the multiplication of the Plasmodium in the blood (Golgi law), the relationship between the vascular pole of the Malpighian glomerulus and the distal tubule, the Golgi's pericellular nets and finally, and most importantly, the cytoplasmic ‘internal reticular apparatus’ (Golgi apparatus). In 1906 Golgi was awarded the Nobel prize for Medicine or Physiology. He died in Pavia on 21 January 1921.
