The book is confined to the study of the “popular morality” of the Athenians of the second half of the fifth century BCE and the whole extent of the fourth. The author moves outward from the central phenomenon of Athenian life, the oikos, comprising the family and extended family (Chapter 1), with a more sideways to take in threats or alternatives to the family, in the shape of courtesans and other ladies of irregular status (Chapter 2), returning then (Chapter 3) to the oikos with a chapter on problems of inheritance. After this he passes (Chapter 4) to the topic of friends and enemies, as essential feature of the Greekpolis.  相似文献

The Deer Stone is an important cultural remain which is scattered a lot in Mongolia, Mainly in the west and northwest areas. It is also found in the Eurasian grasslands but very little in quantity. as for its age, there exist many different views for a long time. Actually the Deer stone displays a way of personification of stone statue, so we usually can find carved weapons and tools on the waist of it. Nevertheless, we can deduce the age according to these carvings. Archaeological discoveries in the northern-grasslands of China show that the carvings on Deer stone are all the typical vessels that were very popular in the late Shang period. Such as the beast-headed or bell-headed short sword with curved handle, the beast-headed sword with upright blade dagger, the ring-headed or double ring-headed short sword, the mushroom-headed short sword, the tub-shaped htchet, the arrow-shaped vessels and etc. Thus lead us to the conclustion that most of the Deer Stones must be of the late Bronze Age(11-7BC).As for the Deer stone culture‘s Similarity in some aspects to that of cultures like Lijiaya, Weiyingzi, third phase of Weifang culture or Xiajiadian culture in the north parts of China, that reflects the northern grasslands bronze culture of China left a strong influence on the cultures of Mongolia.  相似文献

Known primarily for his reformist proposals in the areas of military affairs, foreign policy, the salt monopoly, and the grain tribute system, the influential early nineteenth-century literatus Bao Shichen 包世臣 (1775–1855) also made throughout his life numerous suggestions regarding the improvement of agricultural practice and of rural life. Contrary to the arguments of his older contemporary Hong Liangji that the empire was facing an imminent demographic and provisioning crisis, Bao argued that there was ample possibility for increasing crop yields, and improving popular livelihoods, if a more rational approach was taken to cropping decisions, farm labor allocation, agricultural commercialization, and local-level social organization. Bao was fond of quantification, and, far more than Hong, employed statistical analysis (albeit crude) to bolster his arguments. Fundamentally committed to increasing the power and wealth of the imperial state in the face of threats both foreign and domestic, Bao was highly optimistic that this could be achieved simultaneously with fulfilling his other basic commitment, relieving what he saw as widespread popular immiseration.  相似文献

According to the records, there were 31 cities sited in the Lhasa area and 17 cities in the Xigaze area during the long history of Tibet. "City" actually meant "castle", and the fact is that there were no cities in the real meaning of the word. In some places, large or small pillboxes were built for human habitation without any streets, or even lanes, or surrounding city walls.  相似文献

This volume brings together accounts of biographies of women covering a span of history from the Han dynasty to the mid-twentieth century. Its aim is to define and provide interpretive clues on the genre. It is,as the editors Joan Judge and Hu Ying point out, partly a study of epistemology,as many of the authors grapple with the issue of whether or not historians can claim to know the lives, including the inner worlds,of Chinese women through time, using biographical information. That seems to me a bit of a "straw wo/man," for knowledge of historical subjects is always mediated by sources.Nonetheless, the contributors, writing from the perspective of history or literature studies, bring a wide variety of viewpoints to bear on questions of the usefulness of women's biography for understanding changes in society, and in the process introduce some fascinating Chinese women.  相似文献

The terms "philosophy" and "religion" sometimes arouse the suspicion of Orientalism.Fortunately, the editors and authors gathered here do not engage in controversies about whether China did or did not have religion and/or philosophy.Instead, they delve right into the thick of things. The volume comes neatly accompanied by a second one on Interpretation and Literature, which includes an article by Poo Mu-chou蒲慕州,the title of which,"Justice,Morality, andSkepticism in Six Dynasties Ghost Stories," points to the great volatility of our concepts of literature, philosophy, and religion.  相似文献

Wing Chung Ng's long-awaited second monograph does not disappoint.Ng turns his scrupulous analytical and research skills to the unwieldy, transient world of stage performers and the business of Cantonese opera as it evolved from the late nineteenth to the first half of the twentieth century.Drawing on his nostalgia and experiences with popular regional entertainment while growing up in Hong Kong, the author has pieced together a vivid portrait of a constantly adapting, transnational business whose networks reached far into the Cantonese diaspora.  相似文献
