A memoir of olfaction

Osphreiology, though beginning with Aristotle, and the title of a classical monograph from 1819 by Cloquet, has, like the human sense of smell itself, played a relatively modest role, compared to other sensory functions. The anatomical and physiological connections of the nose to the brain proved to be more complex than those of sight, hearing and even touch, and were therefore poorly understood before the second half of the 19th century. Moreover, the close association between smell and taste gave rise to much controversy regarding the respective roles of the first and the fifth cranial nerves. Next, came the unfolding of the evolutionary influence of cerebral structure and function--viz Broca's "limbic" concept, and the "olfactory desert" in the brains of "anosmatic" animals, Jackson's "uncinate" seizures featuring olfactory hallucinations brought the hippocampal formation into focus. Finally, there were the clinical manifestations of hyposmia and hyperosmia, from "coryza", the common cold, to injury or neoplasms causing hyposmia, as well as some endocrine alterations causing hyperosmia. (And let us not forget Charles Huysman's "Against the Grain" and Marcel Proust's evocative fragrant madeleine.).

Popular geopolitics and political memoir: Geopolitical expertise and force majeure as foreign policy justifications in Tony Blair's A Journey

Political memoirs are not only popular with a general readership, they can also be useful historical source material. The place, form and function of geopolitics within them have been seldom explored, especially in the context of critical geopolitics. This article redresses this balance by arguing that geopolitics is a crucial salient in representations of foreign policy in that it is both a marker of expertise, power and authority, and an effective force majeure, allowing memoirists to depict constraints on action. These conclusions are reached through a theorisation of the form of memoirs in the light of recent innovations in popular geopolitics, in which I propose that they be studied via socio-discursive and fictive categories, in order to discern modes of representation and interactions with audience in justifying and explaining controversial foreign policies. The case study which demonstrates this concerns former UK prime minister Tony Blair’s, 2010 memoir, A Journey, a paradigmatic text in terms of how geopolitics functions in the above modes, particularly in his representations of globalisation, the War on Terror and the UK's relationships with the USA and Europe. By bringing together approaches from popular geopolitics and discursive theories of memoirs, I am able to make an original contribution that highlights the importance of political space within one particular and popular literary form and how this is used to justify past foreign policies.

<正> 今年5月下旬一个晴朗的上午,我跟着旅游团乘德国民航 A333L T1683航班由首都机场起飞,至下午6时56分抵德国杜塞尔多夫机场降落。随着人流走到海关出口,见到德国旅行社接我们的女导游。经过2小时高速公路行驶,我们来到此行第一站——荷兰首都阿姆斯特丹。彭导领我们带着行李乘船游莱茵河的北海段,出口大西洋。莱茵河在欧洲很有名,源于瑞士境内阿尔卑斯山,流经列支敦士登、奥地利、法国、德国与荷兰,全长1320公里。北海段河面约40米宽,水很清,流速很快,接近海口处有许多各色各样客轮、货轮和渔船,船上五颜六色的彩旗迎风招展,构成美不胜收的画廊,让所有的游客心旷     

Ethnohistorical geography and aboriginal rights litigation in Canada: memoir of an expert witness

Since the early 1950s, evidence from ethnohistorical geography has played an important role in aboriginal rights claims and litigation in North America. I became involved in Canadian aboriginal and treaty rights litigation over 35 years ago. My participation has included several landmark cases: Regina v. Horseman (treaty rights), Delgamuukw v. Regina (Comprehensive title claim), and Regina v. Powley (Métis rights). Most of the evidence that I have presented over the years has dealt with various aspects of the changing spatial economies of First Nations and Métis communities from Ontario to British Columbia. The Hudson's Bay Company's vast archive has been the primary source for this data.     

Femininities on transnational journeys and sexual health risk: experiences of Chinese immigrant women in Canada

Negotiations at work in a globalising China in regard to femininity, sexuality, and family relationships have been well documented from the 1990s. Nonetheless less is known about them in a transnational context, and femininities are far less explored than masculinities. Drawing on interview data from a larger research study of transnationalism and gendered HIV vulnerability, this article investigates the intersection of femininity, sexuality and sexual health risk through Chinese immigrant women’s narratives about their experiences in Canada. It examines to what extent these intimate negotiations within China are re-enacted through Chinese immigrant women’s transnational experiences in Canada. These women live ‘in-between’ China and Canada in terms of identity, space and time with their cross-cultural connections unveiling both virtual and actual relations. Gender norms and roles, intimate and sexual experience, and family relations are realigned in the transnational lives of these women and are impacted by both their home and host societies, as well as their past and present experience in China. Used in the article as a concept and an analytical lens, gender is acknowledged as a key organising principle in post-immigration individual and social experience.

张謇与虚而满 1920年一次交往史事管窥——以南通《通海新报》报载资料为主要线索

1920年3月,荷兰驻沪总领事虚而满致函南通保坍会,请求允许两艘本国巡洋舰官兵来通参观游览.荷兰这一支海军舰队访通之际,恰逢此前一艘日本军舰官兵擅自登陆引起南通向日本政府抗议之时,以张謇为代表的南通士绅谨慎考虑,区别对待,既给予虚而满热情回应,答应其请求,又注重维护国家主权、民族尊严与南通荣誉.其间,对张謇决定邀请荷兰巡洋舰官兵发挥关键作用的,是荷兰工程师亨利克·特来克生前对南通水利事业作出的杰出贡献.
