In Tibetan medicine, all food and medicinal plants have their origin in the four elements （earth, water, fire, air and space）. They are therefore classified according to certain characteristics, associated with a particular element. Classification of based upon these characteristics, which can range from intrinsic properties, such as moisture, to the taste of a given food or plant. To classify by element, the nature ofagiven plant is also analyzed according to its initial ＂seed＂： its initial ＂constitutive elements＂. It is important to remember the distinction between the two uses of the term element. As a tool for classification, the constitutive elements are the lowest common denominators into which a substance can be divided, basically, its essential element. They show the original preponderance of one element-such as water-over another, and determine the final classification of a whole plant as belonging to one or another element.

From Tongbo Village to Widow Village—The Legacy of the Chinese Civil War

Located on Dongshan Island,off the coast of Fujian province,is a typical rural village called Tongbo.On May 10,1950,147 men were abducted by the KMT army on its way to Taiwan.Since a majority of the men were already married,overnight,their wives became "widows," and most would remain so for the rest of their lives.Consequently,Tongbo village became more widely known as Widow Village.The first objective of this paper is to document the tragic experiences of men and women in Tongbo village,focusing on these forced separations in 1950,the possibility of reunion after 1987,and the struggle to cope with the difficulties in between.The second objective of this paper is to argue that while heartbreaking,the experiences of this village are not extraordinary in the context of the Chinese Civil War.What made the men and women in Tongbo extraordinary is not their collective suffering,but how these villagers suffered less,not more,than in many other places,because of the actions of three key figures.

The Tibetan astronomical calendrical calculation has a long history. There are many documentary records and Tibetan people have rich experiences of it. Tibetan calendrical designation of years as a summary of Tibetan people‘s experiences in their struggle with the nature is an important part of Tibetan astronomy and calendrical calculation. It takes twelve years as a small cycle and 6o years as a big cycle. A big cycle is called “rabjung” {rab-byung} in Tibetan. The first rabjung started in 1027 and the current rabjung is the 17th rabjung.

The language policy being employed in Tibet is"Tibetan language in the majority,but Tibetan and Chinese language side by side".We have already writ- ten articles on language acquisition and the use of Ti- betan and Chinese in Tibet.We find that there is some disparity among Tibetan residents in the acquisition and use of these languages.Subconscious emotion in language has many aspects,including attitudes and actions.We will discuss this in reference to a test analy- sis of attitudes towards the two languages.
